Can anyone enlighten me as to the point of this song?

I've always loved this song but have no idea who Mr. Kite is supposed to be.

I read somewhere that John Lennon wrote lyrics for this song nearly verbatim from the text in a 19th Century circus poster he had seen. As far as I tell, the point might be that Lennon could make a great song out of nearly any subject matter, especially the technical wizardry from George Martin and the boys at Abbey Road Studios. :)  As the saying goes, he could probably make a hit record reading from a phone book...  ;D
