What is the solution?

The solution is one that you don't want to do--adding numeric values to the beginning of the file names.

I use a naming convention that is almost like having folders.  I add a short alpha code to the beginning of all file names I want grouped together, then a numeric value to determine the sequence.

For example, I have a two sets of MP3s that accompany different instructional books.  The file names associated with Blues Practice Tracks get "bpt-" added to the beginning, and the ones for Progressive Scales & Modes for Guitar get "psmg-" added.

So the files are grouped together, and also in the right sequence when I play them in the MBR.

Check it out:

bpt-02 Cool Shuffle Blues.mp3
bpt-03 Hip Hop Blues.mp3 ...
bpt-09 3_4 Slow Gospel Blues.mp3
bpt-10 Straight Up Blues.mp3
bpt-11 Minor Baby Blues.mp3

Of course, you won't see the long names in the BR, but you'll have to deal with that.

And, if you are a bit of a geek and don't want to rename all of these files manally, you might try some of the free software that can batch rename files.  I use Rename Master.  I've never used Batch Rename, but it looks a little more user friendly.

I was afraid of that. You know what is easier than a batch renaming program? This definitely works in Windows XP and higher.

Lets take this for example

psmg-01.mp3
psmg-02.mp3
psmg-03.mp3

select all three MP3's right click on the first file and rename.
psmg (1).mp3
Once you hit enter, the rest of the selected files will follow the naming convention. It will look like this

Quotepsmg (1).mp3
psmg (2).mp3
psmg (3).mp3
I do this for photos on vacation. I'm an avid snowboarder, so I'll name the folder \Colorado 2008
