RE-RECORDED following suggestions as described below

I took a new approach.  I used a program called "Band-in-a-box" ($99).  You type in chords, select a style, and hit play.  It generates a song with synth instruments.  I googled "rock chord progressions", ha, ha!  The top of the first page said "DAG", so I typed "DAG".  I selected style "Phil Collins" (yeah, sometimes cheesy, but I like him), and hit play. While DAG was repeating, I sung random things until I came up with the first lyric line.  Then I wanted a change.  After trying a bunch I hit on Bm.  It quickly flowed from there in a couple hours.  There is a whistling part in the middle--If anyone has a better idea for a solo break in that section, or thinks I should just remove it, let me know.

D            A                 G                           D
Verse 1
D            A                 G                           D
How long, Will you wait, For me to come back home
Thinking of you, But there's work to do, I have to come home late
Living together, But always apart, Never find the time

Chorus
D                A               G                                  D
Modern Life, Modern Life, Takes a toll on the human mind.
Modern Life, Modern Life, Takes a toll on the human mind.
Bm              A         G        A              G      A
Sometimes I feel like running away, from here, here
D                A               G                                  D
Modern Life, Modern Life, Takes a toll on the human mind.

Verse 2
D             A                     G                            D
Get away, To a small town, Where we can sit and talk
Hike on a trail, Fish in a lake, listen to the trees
Think about life, Without all the noise, And rediscover love

You sound like Lloyd Cole & the Commotions. 2nd generation Lou Reed. Compliments meant indeed. I can see where you're coming from. Inspired stuff. I love it.

A very cool and catchy tune - Neat, clean and fun sounding.

I think a light guitar strum overlay would work well here, but it does sound great on its own.

Nice!

I know of a few other folks who use BIAB.  Neat little prog!  It kinda reminds me of the Polaroid camera.  Easy & instant.  Not really for me, only because I like a bit more control over the process (I don't use presets, except for effects, for example), but this seems like fun though.

Enough about me.  The tune is simple but enjoyable.  The subject matter is cleverly crafted into a fine lyric and the recording is crystal clear.  I can imagine some acoustic guitar strumming along with the track.  Just a suggestion.

Thanks for the complements and suggestions. I have re-recorded and reposted above.  I added an acoustic guitar track, removed synth elec guitar (too fake), Redid vocal, Upped drums & bass.  Hopefully this makes it sound more "organic", though still intended to be soft pop rock-y.
