Quote from: Satchwood on May 22, 2010, 10:57:23 AMFor some reason, i can't punch-in/out to fix any piano errors.  I have no problem doing this with guitar songs and even vocals, but i just can't punch-in on any of my piano tunes and make it sound right....

Has anybody successfully done this on a piano/keyboard piece or section?  Is there a special trick?  i can do it with fine results on my guitar stuff...

Another thing that works sometimes is to punch in on a different track.  For example, if you're happy with section A on track 1, then make a mistake, set up the punch in point as you would normally but on track 2.  Delete the mistake section on track 1.  Play back track 1 from a few bars before the bit you don't like whilst playing along on track 2.  Play all through section B whilst recording.  The final stage is to mix the 2 tracks together whilst bouncing down to a single track.

You still have to get the punch in points fairly accurate but it's not quite so critical and you don't get the horrible silence.  You do have to be careful that panning, eq, effects are identical on both tracks.

All this assumes that this is possible on the MBR - but I would have thought it is.

Give it a go and good luck.

The other thing that I often do is to start out with the deliberate intention to record a piece in sections using the method I described above.  If a piece is particularly challenging and I'm not totally confident about playing it all the way through perfectly, I will split it up into sections.  I'll record section A on track 1, section B on track 2, section C back on track 1 etc.  When you have pieced together the piano for the whole song, mix and bounce the two tracks down to one track.

When you are planning the sections you'll soon work out where to cut the sustain pedal back to leave any tiny little gaps that might be necesary, or indeed hold a note/chord a little longer to marginally sustain under the start of the next section.

Cheating?  Absolutely - but no more so than any other type of drop in.

Hope this makes sense Tommy.

Hey thank you for your suggestions Cuth and Paul !!  So it's the sustain pedal that's the culprit, eh!

I especially like your second method Paul; I do find it hard to play for 3 or 4 minutes on the keyboards without making an oops...  I've scrapped so many songs, because the auto punch sounded like crap and wrecked the piece.   Piecing it together might be a challenge, but i think i'd like to give it a go...

Luv my sustain pedal, and probably use it too much lol; now it all makes better sense,,, thank you both for your input, it got me doin a little thinking now.....

You make me sick Tommy!!

To play the guitar like you do is one thing, but to top it all you compose and play something as bloody brilliant as this on the keys!

This is such an emotive beautiful piece of music, send chills up my spine listening to it.

You are a unique talent my friend!
