There are a few of my singer/songwriter heroes who occasionally do instrumentals, like the late Dan Fogelberg (recorded an album of mostly instrumental originals in collaboration with jazz flautist Tim Weisberg called "Twin Sons From Different Mothers" circa 1978).  Joe Jackson also has been known to intermix an instrumental or two on his albums.  I think Billy Joel has an album of all instrumentals.  My heroes do this and so do I.  In fact, I enjoy doing instrumentals every now and then if for to just take a break from lyric writing and singing.

This is called "Corridors" so named because of the Chinese bamboo sticks going all the way through, enhanced with a delay that resulted in a sound not unlike footsteps in an open hall.
The Chinese Dizi flute plugin that I used for a solo in "Only Time" plays lead here in harmony in some spots.  It occurred to me while I was recording it that the Dizi sounds a bit like a Lyricon, which for the benefit of the uneducated, is a very early electronic woodwind instrument.  Played like a clarinet but hooked up to a synthesizer module to make all kinds of weird noises.  Anybody familiar with the New Age band Shadowfax probably has heard the work of the late Chuck Greenberg on the Lyricon.

"Corridors" was recorded using Mixcraft 5 and Magix Music Studio in May of 2010.

This is my third post in as many days.  I'll back off for awhile and get to know more of your tunes.

Enjoy!

Now that was really good John.  Very pro quality music and very well recorded and mixed.  Are you using soft synths or hardware?

BTW - there's nothing wrong with a good instrumental in my opinion.  This is a good instrumental in my opinion.  I can't sing so all of my solo stuff is instrumental.

Look forward to hearing more.

Paul & Satch, Thanks very much!
It's all PC based, so I guess you can say it's a soft synth.  It's actually from a combination of sound libraries between two MIDI programs.  Both programs have an instrument "library" of sounds that can be used.  Generally with this one, the piano and drums were from Samplitude and the synths were from Mixcraft.  The bass is from a Cakewalk program I have called Dimension LE.  Bamboo sticks are from a freebie called Independence Free by Yellow Tools and the Dizi flute is another freebie (see initial post).  So, all in all I guess it's a soft synth.

John, I really enjoyed this, a very different instrumental. I like the change at 1:30 which gives it a very different feel from the other sections. Really good percussion track going on there, and a great piano sound for a software synth. The processed vox at about 3:10 are a nice touch as well. Very good arrangement and very well produced, a really sophisticated piece of work, well done!

Cheers,

This is great. It puts me in mind of Lalo Schifrin. The imposing, sparse, grand piano. Very intimidating and tension building riff. Think I've watched Dirty Harry too many times ;D. Then it goes somewhere else and I feel safe again. This is atmospheric stuff JohnBee. Your choice of instruments and sounds work perfectly. Ur mixing is very clear & uncluttered. Can't think of any constructive critisism here, it's all good. Don't stop posting. Keep em coming please.
