Every so often, I find it necessary to inflict my tastes on the unsuspecting few.  I tried with the artists Jack Pearson, Wayne Krantz, Michael Hedges, and Shawn Lane off the top of my head.  Just thought I'd give it another whirl.

I have fallen under the spell of a guy named Bobby Lee Rodgers.  In jamband circles, he made his name (relatively speaking) with Colonel Bruce Hampton and The Codetalkers.  Colonel Bruce previously formed The Aquarium Rescue Unit, a band you should investigate if you've never heard of them. The brief version is that all the musicians in that tiny Atlanta band went on to become world-class players in successful bands (Allman Brothers, Widespread Panic, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead, etc.).

Anyway, I first started getting interested in BLR when he toured with Jeff Sipe (who played with Shawn Lane) and Jimmy Herring (now in Widespread Panic and formerly of The Allman Brothers.  He also put out a jazz album called Lifeboat last year that both Chick Corea and John McLaughlin have openly lauded in interviews).

Although the musicianship of this band first attracted me, I have since really gravitated to his simple songwriting. I find myself wanted to cover half a dozen of his songs. This tune is called "Body in the Lake" and was played last Saturday at Florida's Wanee Festival. I think that's why it is fresh in my mind. It was great to see a crowd of people react to the humor in the song.  And although I wouldn't call this one of my absolute favorites by him, it cracks me up to the point where I thought you might get a kick out of it...maybe enough to check out Bobby Lee Rodgers. By the way, his main stage guitar is a 1949 Gibson. He really makes the dark tone work.

To the site administrators, this mp3 is linked to a free download from one of his sites. Nothing shady or questionable about posting it.  As a matter of fact, here is a link to one of the many complete shows he has available for free download.

Body in the Lake
Bobby Lee Rodgers

Took myself a little vacation
Lay out by the water in the sand
Now I came across a little old man
You know he looked like he might need a helping hand
So he walked right over to my window
Said, "You better raise your hands, it's time for you to die"
So I put my foot to the metal
Yeah, he got hung up on the side
So I took him for a ride, yeah

Threw the body in the lake
You know that I threw him off that bridge so far he liked to make a tidal wave
Threw the body in the lake
You know that sometimes to just stay alive
You gotta make a few mistakes

Went on my way back to Pensacola
Steering crooked, grinding out the gears
No I couldn't believe what I just done
So I sat right down and poured myself a beer
Then I turned on the radio station
Said they'd found some body washed up on the side
Then my heart sped up to a million
Yeah, if I'm gonna stay alive
You know I better run & hide

Threw the body in the lake
You know that I threw him off that bridge so far he liked to make a tidal wave
Threw the body in the lake
You know that sometimes to just stay alive
You gotta make a few mistakes

Heard on the morning news today
One they'd found was not the one I thought I'd killed
Turns out that little old man
Shot his wife up in that old tobacco mill
Then I turned on the radio station
I got my car and slammed it down in drive
Then I rode right off with my freedom
Yeah, you know it's good to be alive
When you don't have to run and hide, yeah

Threw the body in the lake
You know that threw him off that bridge so far, he liked to made a tidal wave
Threw the body in the lake
You know that sometimes in life
You gotta make just a few mistakes, yeah

Threw the body in the lake
You know that, threw him off that bridge so far he liked to made a tidal wave
Threw the body in the lake
You know that sometimes in life
You gotta make a few mistakes

Yeah, just a few mistakes ... whoa
Threw the body in the lake .... yeah
Threw the body in the lake ... yeah ... whoa

Ha ha. Love it. This is great music by any standards, as well as being funny. Really feel-good stuff. And I've been to Pensacola, lol.

Thanks Blooby!  I never would have discovered this guy.

This style is not usually to my tastes--many styles aren't. But occasionally someone will hand-pick a song for me that keeps my mind cracked open.
