More recently he stood for the then newly created London mayoralty in 2000. Amongst his policies was the serving of alcohol in libraries.
I would have voted for that.

It's an end of an era.

What can you say about such a complex and influential character? He was a chancer who was in the right place at the right time and saw an opportunity and grabbed it. I'm sure that I wouldn't have grabbed it and the moment would have been gone.
He had the balls to grab it and run with it, and that's what made the difference.

I'll miss him.
