Listening to Tom Waits always reminds me that you don't have to be a tremendous singer or musician but what you have to be is sincere.

I agree. Sincerety goes a long way! as does originality.

But I have to disagree with your assessment of Tom's talent as a singer and musician. He's got conviction and he's all about performance and texture. You'll never find him recording in a state of the art studio, looking for that perfect sound or recording. As he says, he likes to leave the smell in his music. His favorite places to record are rooms that are unaware that they have good acoustics...like an old rundown schoolhouse. Check this out:
