So I cheated. This is a re-write of a song written last March. Sunday night my 12 year old puppy died next to me on the kitchen floor. I did some more work on it Sunday night and finished it and recorded it last night. So I guess it isn't really cheating:

I sit here watching time go slipping by
It wasn't long ago a puppy was by my side
I sit here with the memories from our past
It wasn't long ago that she appeared
But now that dreadful time is slowly drawing near
I wonder why our time is fading fast

Foxey Lady you are the one for me
You're all I ever want, You're all I ever need
Foxey Lady, I've loved you all these years
And now I'm fighting back all of these tears
I sit here with the memories from our past
And I wonder why our time is fading fast

When I look into those loving eyes
I find it very hard to say my last goodbyes
And I think about the memories from our past
I met you before my youngest child was born
And now I say goodbye before these tears can form
And I wonder why our time is fading fast

Foxey Lady you are the one for me
You're all I ever want, You're all I ever need
Foxey Lady, I've loved you all these years
And now I'm fighting back all of these tears
I sit here with the memories from our past
And I wonder why our time is fading fast

I sit beside you on the kitchen floor
Running out of time and wanting even more
I hold you as you take your last breath
Then my daughter comes running up the stairs
She asks that question that just sits in the air
How do I explain your sudden death?

Foxey Lady you are the one for me
You're all I ever want, You're all I ever need
Foxey Lady, I've loved you all these years
And now I'm fighting back all of these tears
I sit here with the memories from our past
And I wonder why our time is fading fast

Thanks ORH. I felt a bit guilty with feelings so similar to the ones I had a short time ago with my grandmother passing. It definitely feels like I've lost two family members instead of a family member and a pet.

I know what you mean.  I was much more affected when my 12-year-old dog died five years ago than when either of my grandparents passed.

This is a wonderful song.  And I'm very sorry for your losses.

Jeez, I had to turn this off as I was breaking up. We lost our first dog very suddenly over a year ago, he was just a pup of 1 year (he was taken fatally ill very suddenly). We now have an older rescue dog and I can't bear to think of when this moment will happen to me. So I guess your song did its job too well.

Tears,

Nigel

Sorry to hear about your dog.  64 told me to have a listen to this.  My dog Harry got run over a week ago so I might leave it till I get home to have a listen.

That's probably a good idea, Migs.

So sorry about Harry.

My dog Chamba died five years ago, and I still get pangs of grief for him.  This song certainly stirred them up.

He looked like a Border Collie, but was actually a mutt from a Cameroonian village.
