Greasy Teeth

Here's an example of an experiment that came together real fast and went in an unexpected direction this morning.
I had this bass line kicking around for a while and couldn't figure out what to do with it. Now I know, I was over-thinking
the whole thing. Got up this morning, (with greasy teeth), let the dogs out, made some strong coffee, sat down in
front of the MICRO BR, and WHAM, before I knew it all these parts came out. Reminds me of Frank Gambale meets
K.C. and the Sunshine Band or something.

I don't know what key its in or anything, (don't tell my guitar students  :-[ ), so its just what it is. It has that vibrancy that
only comes with genuine spontaneity. It basically took me for a wild funky ride when I still had cobwebs in my head! It wasn't until I pushed the button and the screen showed GT>P38:PlxiStrt that the whole sassy modal lead part came out - that effects setting was actually the inspiration.

Four tracks, no bounces, and minimal mastering.

For what its worth, here it is:

Yeah ... funk rock? Should have done it BEFORE the coffee, have even more "edge" then  ;) Sounds great. Aint it funny how you can sit for hours trying hard and nowt happens, then something just clicks and all this stuff comes out?

Yeah, I like when that happens. Its effortless, fun, and usually more musical than something painstakingly labored over. I do believe you have to be ready for it, though. Practiced-up on your instrument and a mindset to go with what happens, which can be particularly scary on stage. This one took me by the hand and said, "Hey, buster, we're going over there - are you coming, or not?" I was too sleepy to resist.

Jeff Beck is like that, I believe - soloing largely by playing whatever comes to him musically at that moment. I saw him a few times back in the seventies. Sometimes he was brilliant, sometimes terrible. Hendrix, too. Actually, hearing that coming from the "Big Guns" helped me in my playing mindset way back then. If you never reach into uncharted territory, nothing remarkable ever happens.

I have to elaborate on the statement above regarding spontaneous ideas being more musical than worked-out ideas. Often times the root idea may have come unexpectedly, but then fleshed out with an arrangement to make it a great piece. I certainly don't want to downplay the importance of crafting a piece of music. I spent too many years learning and working in songwriting to say otherwise.

Its just fun to be thrown a musical bone now and then, and experience the vibrancy of a piece like this one. Whether anyone likes it, or not. This certainly isn't a mainstream song ... I'm glad!

By the sequence of my posts, it is not difficult to understand I'm following your playlist. You have real cool stuff here!

This is a real nice groove. And you chose very well the drumset. It is not usual, and it is a very funky snare!

Well done! I'm happy that I found you!

Silky sweet skills! Kind of free-form funk to my ears. Amazing playing.
