Hey guys... goin through some files. Thought I might post some of my band's stuff up here to get some constructive comments on recording techniques. This is one of our favorite tunes... Thin Lizzy is a band that never got the notoriety they deserved. They were probably one of the most influential bands of their time (My time).  This is a live outdoor recording that was done some time ago with the BR on board mic. I recorded a stereo track hoping to widen it up a bit. Seems to me the drums sound thin (Tinny). The guitar was in the background a little and the bass well... seem'd a bit too bright. This was totally oposite of the what was being heard in front of the Mains. We had just added some sub woofers to the PA set up and it was thumping to say the least. Although this recording isn't horrible... It can be better. Any suggestions???

This is my favorite song by Thin Lizzy. That and "I'm a Rocker". Love it!!!

I think it sounds great for a live recording. I'm not an expert by any means, but the MBR has a really sensitive condenser mic and it is not well suited for "loud" music. This tune was meant to be played loud!!  ;D

What mic patch setting did you use? You are better off to record in mono and then "stereoize" it later if you are using only one mic. Stereo effects will mess with the dynamics of all those instruments playing at once.

But I'm not an expert, so I'll leave it at that. I love this song!!

i have been trying to record my mate styx live for a number of times now with varying degrees of success. i got the cheap sony stereo mic of ebay about £5. they seem to give more control over the sound as you can place them better than the mbr itself. its all about finding the sweet spot. problem with using an external mic, is all the buttons you have to press, forget which ones am sure 64 guitars will enlighten us, but crucially on a number of occassions ive forgotten to switch one button, that powers the mic or some such and recorded silence.

i think i might get a better result and more control from a line out but styx reckons not, so any advice welcome here too.

oh by the way cool post.

One of my favorite Lizzy tunes as well.  The singer has the Phil thing down from what I can hear.  Nice. I need to go break out Live and Dangerous now.

Launched, Thanks bro... the effects were turned off during the recording. I added effects later during mastering to MP3. I used the P04 Live Mix (default settings).

As far as recorder placement... I set my BR about 30 feet away from the Mains (Centered) facing the stage. Input was set to 70 on the microphone (I trying to push the threshold to get some punch).  Maybe it's just me... being too critical, but I still haven't been ablt to acheive a good drum sound IMO. I strike the drums pretty hard when I play rock music... the mic tends to filter out the low's high's... so I get this really tinny sounding percussion.

Jim... I think your recording Is definately pulling out more low's and high's than mine. This might be worth a shot. Do you remember what your input level was set at???

i think i had sns down as far as it goes. problem was i recorded about ten songs that night and only got 1 or 2 good takes.
thats why i am considering next time going through a line out, but stix reckons it wont work cant recall his reasoning something to do with effects or some such.
some others on here have had success recording live but my live recordings have been in the pub and after a few beers well my production skills go out the window.
i would suggest you have someone at the controls to monitor the recordings tho.

hopefully someone with a better knowledge than i have will enlighten us both.
