Hi All,
I thought I'd toss in a new one, not yet finished...the vocal on this track is a spoken "walkthrough", more as a placekeeper for when my friends (who can actually SING) get over to our home studio and put down a finished vocal on it. Where this forum is about the craft of making music, I felt it might be appropriate to put this up as is for now, and then add the final once the vocals are in place.

The theme is about reflecting back to a simpler time, when things seemed to make sense, and the world wasn't such a confusing and scary place to be living in...

What I'm shooting for is a "Roger Daltrey" feel for the vocals...strong, defiant. The song runs a bit long now, thinking that my friend Al (who CAN sing well) may do some improvising over the lead at the end. If not, I'll fade it down and out sooner than has been done here. We're planning to get together shortly to get our second album underway, and this song will be one of the first we'll be working on...once it's done, I'll post it up so you can all see what it sounds like with a real voice in it!

Verse 1:

                All the record keepers
                In their dusty nooks
                Are scribbling like mad
                Into their great big books
                They chronicle events
That happen every day.....that's what they say!

                Things I took for granted
                In the recent past
                Have slipped away so quickly
                Could it be that fast?
                I'd like to see tomorrow
If there were a way.....that's what I say!

Chorus:

The future isn't  what it used to be
Not what I imagined back at twenty-three
None of this is making any sense to me....Oh No!

Verse 2:

The life I used to have
                Was like a TV show
                Glorious in monochrome
                With lots of snow
                There goes Gleason saying
"And away we go!".....that's what he said!

                Technology has given us
                A chance to see
                The people that we trusted
                Are not what they seem
                I'm hoping to wake up
                And find it's been a dream.....that's what I say!

Chorus:

The future isn't  what it used to be
Not what I imagined back at twenty-three
None of this is making any sense to me....Oh No!

-Lead Break-

-Chorus-

-Lead to fade out-
The future isn't what it used to be...

This is a pretty cool song, and I really enjoyed the spoken word approach. The music is fantastic.

Thanks very much, Tony...I'm a bassist who's "moonlighting" on guitar on these things, and I'm still trying to get a handle on these skinny little strings that you guys manage to do such wonderful things with!

I appreciate how you went for quality and not quantity with the music. But, hey, that's what bass players do!  ;) Excellent, clean music. Love it.

The spoken word sounds cool, but I kind of wish you had tried to sing on it. Based on your verbal cadence and your keen ability to emphasize, I think you could have done a good job.

Great tune and pro songwriting.

Wow...thanks so much oldrottenhead, PJD1, hank987 and Mark...I absolutely promise to post up the finished version once Al gets over here to do the vocals...

Mark - I hope my friend "Tubby" doesn't see your comment...he's ALWAYS trying to get me to sing on these things! I quote Clint Eastwood, from one of the Dirty Harry films..."A man's got to know his limitations". I'm only just now trying to do lead work on these songs...I don't mind playing rhythm so much, but lead's always been that "scary place" to me  :o

These guys, especially Tubby and Al, are great vocalists...I leave the singing to them, because I want the music to sound GOOD!  ;)

Again, thanks very much for the kind words!
