Thanks for the comments, folks.  Oddly, I don't have a great emotional investment in this song even though my mother has had cancer, and two of my friends are battling it right now.  I guess it's hard for me to get past the hokey nature of the tune.  I hope that isn't a crap thing to say, but I can't help the way I feel.  In the end, I hope it helps our drummer's friend's uses for it with regard to the cause.  Personally, I'd much rather play multiple free concerts than have to write a song about such a serious topic.  It's easy for me to cast stones at the lyrics, but hell, I wouldn't even know how to approach the lyrics to a task like this.  I'll stick with prose.

As for the organ screech, the keyboardist did it on purpose, which is made funnier by the fact that he is the most subdued, mature member of the bunch.  Like I said, I just couldn't edit it out.

And now on an even less serious note, there's a Paul Gilbert disc called  Burning Organ.  Stills makes me snicker.  Lord, when will I grow up?

Indeed a bit corny, but you did a good a job with it. Hints of "True" by the Spands in the choppy guitar chords? The sung vox are nice as well and the guitar at the end is fab - great sound.

Cool song - i like that screech in their, added a bit of humor to a non-humorous subject!

I do dig your guitar solo man at the end - sweet!!

Really gets the point across. Nothing like music to do that. Well written and performed. Lost my dad to cancer. Best of luck!
There are only three kinds of drummers. Those who can count, and those who can't.

This version below may not be the final vocal mix, but this is about as close as it's going to get. I still am not too fond of the spoken word part but oh well.

John re-did the lead vocal, and he and his his niece added the background vocals as well as the spoken word part.  Alas, it pained me to edit out the egregious organ screech, but in the end, it had to go.  At least I left in the over-the-top outro.

Hello Blooby
A truly heart felt message, excellent production and great musicianship. As far as the spoken part, the pace is good but I also feel somethings a bit off with it. I believe it maybe in the effect or the fact that it sounds to good...to warm. The song is very well produced but I think the spoken part should stand in contrast. Like a Doctor standing at a mic, stating cold hard fact. The quality of the sound should reflect that. Almost as if you recorded it off the evening news. I hope this makes sense.
The outro is wickedly perfect.
