Well, after reading the many threads regarding the BR-600 differences to my MBR, I've decided to pull the trigger and order one. My new br600 should be here next week.

Now, I am ordering a Shure SM57 dynamic mic too, but I have a question regarding using it with the BR-600. Will it work fine with the br600 alone, or should I get  preamp or mixer to run it thru before directing it to the br600?

Thanks

Geir

You've shown that you get a brilliant sound of the mbr built-in mic ... why not just use the line-out from the mbr into the 600 ? :D

I don't think you need a preamp btw .... Vanncad can answer that better I think he has the setup you're ordering!

The one thing I've not been able to do with the MBR is record my amp with any kind of decent quality. The condenser mic isn't exactly suited for mic'ing amps. :/

I love my amp and the tone I get from it and I've always hated that I can't use it for my recordings. And the sm57 with boom and cable etc is such a good deal, I figured I'd pick it up any way since I am getting the br600 and it comes with the adapter for xlr mics.

I can't exactly answer for the 600, but I did pick up a 1600 on craigslist for $425. I mic'd up my acoustic, then mic'd up my amp with a 57 directly.

I'm no guru by any stretch, but I felt it came out pretty awesome. Too bad somebody awesome wasn't playing :)

Dave Might help with this... but he has a 1200.

I've got a 600 and it's a great piece of kit, I've never tried recording amps with it but I would imagine you'd need an external mic to get a decent sound, but that's just me guessing!

Do the 600's have the same electronic internal system as the Micro's? Just more channels? I've used my SM57 direct in to my MBR, with a processor, and with my mixer w/phantom power and have gotten great results.

Banny -
I ordered a Shure SM57 mic for mic'ing the amp. Supposed to be the "industry standard" instrument mic.

My problem was that I didn't have a mixer or other processor to hook a mic to before going into the MBR. The only mic I had, other than the Sony Consdenser, was a cheap Audio Technica vocal mic. Didn't really do the job. I figured since i was getting the br600 and it comes with the xlr adapter, that I would order the SM57 too. I was just unsure as to whether I would be better off still getting a preamp or mixer, THEN go into the br600, or if the br600 can handle the SM57 by itself.

Thanks

I think the XLR adapter is a lo-z adapter (I think that's what Vann told me), which is necessary because the input on the BR units have a much higher impedance as they are designed for a guitar to be directly plugged into it. So you have to have something like this or your microphone won't record properly.

With the right impedance matchup you shouldn't need a mixer or a preamp. Unless you really want a preamp, which a lot of people do.

P.S. A quality topic such as this should be in the appropriate board category. General Discussion is for mindless drivel!  ;D

Actually, that's incorrect Mark. You don't want to plug a mic into the (high Z) Guitar input. The BR-600 has two Mic inputs which have an input impedance of 2k ohms (medium impedance). These are balanced 1/4" phone jacks. The adapter included with the BR-600 merely adapts the mic's XLR connector to a 1/4" tip-ring-sleeve connector to go into the BR's mic input jack. It's not an impedance matching transformer. I think the only reason that Boss used 1/4" balanced jacks for the mic inputs is that the BR-600 is too thin to accommodate the usual XLR mic inputs. So they went with the much smaller phone jacks and the adapter cable instead.

The Shure SM57's impedance is 310 ohms, which is fine for connecting directly to the BR-600's Mic inputs. If you were recording vocals or acoustic guitar with it, then you might want a preamp. But for mic'ing a guitar amp, there should be no problem connecting the SM57 directly to the BR-600's Mic input using the supplied adapter cable.

Thanks for pointing that out. I've moved it to Home Recording / General.

Hey Sai - Cool to hear you are getting a 600. I think you get great music out of the MBR already!

I think I got a SM57 with a cable for under $100 (Christmas present from my lovely wife  ;D). It is a studio "standard" for sure.

Regarding the SM57 - I just plug mine directly into the BR600 with the included adapter.
I place the mic about 1" away from the speaker, and offset about 2-3" from center.
I usually use mic effect P01, and add extra delay/reverb as necessary.

I'm not a audio guru by any stretch of the imagination (see Launched for stuff like that), but I like the Strat guitar sounds I get from micing the amp.

These two songs were both recorded this way using an SM57 and an SM58 (virtually the same mic - just a different wind screen I guess).

Just Leave a Note (SM57)
Without a Fight (SM58)

I really look forward to hearing what you come up with Sai!
Like I said, I'm certainly not the most technical guy here, but I will try to help you with any questions.
It ain't pretty being easy.
