Adding effects to just 1 track on the MBR?

I can't seem to work out how to add effects to just 1 track. I'm using a lapsteel and stomp box through a small mixer and going into 'line in', so the guitar's on track 1, and the stomp box's on track 2.
It says on page 64/65 of the manual that I can record 'dry' ( using the 'location' setting), then add effects to 1 track------ but I can't find where it tells me HOW.

Help???????

Cheers.

Hey Steve:

I think that's all you can do is record dry (Or turn the effects off) with line in. The track options are for ones that are already recorded. The only two selections for INPUT is Normal and Record Dry. Record dry means you hear the effect while playing, but it is not applied to the recorded track(s).

So I think you have to record dry, select the track you want to apply the effects to, then bounce the track with the effect patch you want.

So it's possible, but you may have to take an extra step.

Mark's reply is correct but I think a bit more detail might make it clearer.

1) Record Dry - There are two ways you can do this. The easiest way is to simply turn off the insert effects by pressing the EFFECTS button. The other way is to set the insert point to INPUT <REC DRY>. Either way, the recorded track will turn out exactly the same, with no effects. The difference is in what you will hear while you're recording. Obviously, with the effects turned off, you'll hear the clean, un-effected guitar sound. But, if you use INPUT <REC DRY> instead, you can dial up any effect you like and listen to the effected signal while recording the dry, un-effected signal. The reason that you might want to do that in some cases is that you'll probably play differently through an over-driven amp model than you will with a clean sound. So, if you want to record a lead guitar solo, for example, through an over-driven amp model but you can't decide whether to use the Marshall model or the Metal D model, then it would probably be best to choose one of them and use INPUT <REC DRY>. Then you can hear the chosen amp model while recording. And later, you can try the other one for comparison by bouncing the dry track through the effects. But it's mostly a matter of convenience and personal preference. If you prefer to keep it simple and just switch off the effects, there's nothing wrong with that.

2) Now that you've got your dry track, you need to re-record it by bouncing it through the insert effects. To do that, first set the insert point to TRACK 1 (or whichever track or track pair you want to be effected) as described on pages 64 and 65. Now select the desired effect patch and bounce the track to another v-track. After the bounce, the destination v-track will contain the effected version of the track, and the original v-track will still have the dry version. If you want to try another effect, re-select the dry v-track and repeat the process.

When you're finished, don't forget to set the insert point back to INPUT <NORMAL>.
