Thanks Mark.
The perfect take certainly makes it easier to mix for sure. A-B Punching can take a lot of time and skill.
Keeping it simple really helps too. (One of my bad habits is to put too many parts in). Balance depends on a good set of monitors (which I don't have) and the MP3 often turns out quite different from the earphones.
I'm told you should only record with the "cans" and never mix with them.
Makes sense.
The Micro does have all you need, it's just knowing which FX to use and how to tweak them.
On the Vox here I used Only Limit.
Then in a later bounce I added the same track again with a touch of delay (Vocal FX1) on the second (A touch too much on this one) and a bit panned.
It helps keep it clean and present without being too dead.

How about you?

Oh dear. I spend a lot more time mixing and editing than I do recording. Probably 3 to 4 times more on mixing and recording. I guess that shows I am trying to make up for average musicianship with a Phil Spector production job.

Apols if the polishing comment came across as a bit negative, but for me the mix lacks a bit of definition. I think there's a bit too much happening on the mid range frequencies and that means some of the low end definition is getting lost. The drums are also a bit lost for me. You could do a lot with eq and compression to bring more definition to it but as I said, the song works very well as a song.

Cheers,

No, Nigel, no offence.
I'm delighted to get feedback from folks who are into the mixing side of things.
So much to learn.
I just quit a 12 pc band last fall who were not into "fixing the mix". They were all fighting for the same sonic space (not to mention center stage) and could only think in terms of "more volume".
Yes I agree -too much in the middle and I hope to EQ that a bit, as well as tweak the levels so the keys and strings are not competing for chops.

You must finish up this song. Through all of the so called flubs I can still Feel the song. The vocals and lyrics are outstanding and the music feels classic. Billy Joel. One sweet @&S song.
This is one you want to finish now. But then again I haven't heard your other stuff. This may be old hat to you. Lol
But I really like this one.

i agree with nelson.

there is so much feeling on this recording. vitality.

i think sometimes a first take captures all the emotion of a song and when you polish it up and get rid of the "flubs" you lose something of that raw rough diamond you had to begin with.

just an aside something about the vox and piano reminds me of very early split enz well before neil joined his brother tim finn in the band.
if you redo this try and capture the vitality of this one. dont ya wish you could just bottle it.

This is well worth a revamp on the production side Glenn.

Quote from: launched on February 15, 2010, 09:19:00 AMMy efforts have been focused more on setup (mic & input settings, room sound, mic patches, etc.), which I'm really getting into. Kind of like having everything all done before you start. I'll admit it's a lot tougher doing one takes, but that's what I need to be doing.

Superb song Glenn, personally love the feel of this song as it is. Your standard of production is so high, that even a song you claim not to be the finished article still sounds pretty damn great.

Always love great mixture of instruments in your songs, and no exception here.
