I bought that guitar recently because I need a swing guitar that is LOUD. That thing is a cannon and really has a nice presence amongst the other instruments on stage. Whether cross-picking a Gillian Welch/David Rawlings number or pounding out a western swing tune, that guitar fits the bill. I had a retailer who specializes in old archtops scare that one up for me.

I'm sure you know, Kay was never considered a good guitar in its day, but the ones that have survived have a unique sound that is very desirable in certain genres. Is your "project" guitar an archtop or a flattop? Mine is all original, except the green "mother-of-toilet-seat" pick guard. 17" lower bout, no truss rod, 100% solid plywood body, and the neck is not cantilevered. So homely, its gorgeous!

flatop-totally bastardized when i bought in a flea market
it's in pieces-hence the "project" status
Kay's were cheap guitars-the neck looks like it was pine(no kidding) with rosewood fingerboard-possibly maple
the body is looks like maple-plywood of course-
as it is right now- it's not a survivor-in fact i was thinking of making it a piece of decor or planter out of it-lol

My first electric was a Kay ... bought it from Woolworth's. Body about an inch thick, bendy neck, loose tuners, pathetic pickups and a bigsbyish trem that did not work. Wish I still had it so I could laugh at it  ;D

Every time I listen to this I wait for Jim to say ... "Words were exchanged" HA! What great timing.

Thanks, Jim, for the excellent work.

I was wondering what kind of scenario you would come up with. I was thinking maybe trying to convince the judge and jury that Nessie ate your wife while you were there, and you didn't actually do her in!

Another great song. Very interesting how you try to tell a story soleley with music. I liked ORH version too (BTW I feel very relieved when native english speakers confess they don't understand the harsher scottish accent).
