Short gaps in sound while punching in / out

Hi all.
Been busy with my BR1200Cd for a couple of months now but am having trouble with short gaps at start and end of punch in / out editing. Anyone got some tips to make it all sound more smooth and continuous.
Cheers,

It can be tricky to do a smooth punch in. While punch in/out is one of the best features of digital recording, it does take a little practice to get it right. Some things you might want to consider.

1. Be more broad with the punch in - Record enough so you can still get into the song. One measure or two just isn't enough sometimes. A few measures or an entire phrase works better.

2. Start playing well before the punch in starts. Your playing will be looser and the take will sound more organic. That's what punch in is for - It automatically records the phrase while you are jamming along. And I wouldn't use a manual pedal/switch to punch in at first - Take advantage of the automatic features as your device has them.

3. Time sync your parts (Play to a click track). I find it easier to punch in when my music is synchronized with the BR's Rhythm section, even if the E-Drums/Bass are not used in the final product. And in my opinion, it is musical suicide not to do so.

4. Record the punched in part to a different track, and cut the part you don't like out of the original track. This may or may not work for you - Thought I'd throw it out there, though.

These are just my suggestions. I'm hoping others will chime in as it is a subject that is talked about often.

Peace, and don't give up - You'll get it eventually!!

Hi Mark,
#Thanks a million for taking the trouble with your detailed reply. The idea of recording to a different track is one that I didn't think of and will definitely try.Do you know if the scrub function be used to tidy up gaps in songs ? its always a very small break but very noticeable in an otherwise smooth recording. Thanks again for your reply.
Cheers

Ah the scrub function... Unfortunately(Or maybe fortunately  :D), I have the cromagnon man of BR devices. The editing functionality is somewhat limited - But I guess the upside is that it keeps me on my toes!

So I am not your man for that question - Anybody Else? Bueller????

Peace,

Mark

i have a micro br so am not familiar with your model. but could you not export the trach to your pc and edit in software like audacity. i use cubase to remove unwanted pops and clicks on my vocal tracks. the benefit of doing it this way is you can see the wav file and know where to do your editing.

Hi ORH
Thanks for your reply, I am not sure if the files on the BR1200 are transferable and readable on PC ..I have tried to no avail to do that...the manual is a bit vague in this area, I have the Micro BR as well and it is much more PC compatible but I always use the 1200 for serious recording because of the availability of the 12 tracks. Just listened to some of your music and its pretty cool.....I like the ambient vibe on Its your world....nice stuff.

Been listening to your stuff as well Mark ( Launched ) ....great vocals and bass tracks ...keep up the good work.
