Whats the deal with this, why boil your strings in vinegar and water??
I've done it but they don't last long afterwards. In my experience of doing this, the brightness in tone comes back for a few hours of playing then it diminishes and they become real dull.

Boiling strings in a medium such as vinegar only allows for the acidic reaction to disolve or dispense with hand debris such as skin cells, amino acids, grease, sweat etc,etc. It does not account for the fact the more a string is tuned the more it stretches and hence a reduction in the cross sectional area of the core which in turn allows the wrap wire to lessen its grip resulting in a dead sounding string as the situation worsens.
