...other than the fact that the later Pink Floyd took most of its inspiration from Syd and Syd's unfortunate condition.

A high school friend of mine summed it up quite well;

Pink Floyd with Syd = happy/trippy for LSD experinced listeners.
Pink Floyd post Syd = deep/dark life examining for pothead listeners.

True, Sandy - one would never mistake later Floyd with Syd's old band.

Syd made happy sounds (while he could).    Roger Waters, not so happy.
