the quartet decided to do a "Free Jazz" piece on New Year's day

not sure if it's hangover driven or what

thanks for listening.

As soon as I heard the start of this I thought "Zappa" and then I saw your quote.  For me there is nothing so exalted on the face of god's grey earth as the mystery muffin man himself and this is a great piece.

Frank Zappa was truely a genius.

i'm nowhere close, but thank you for the compliment.

This is fun stuff. Well balanced and blended, nice tonal hand-offs and overlaps between instruments. Good steady building of parts and dynamics. not for everyone, but what is?

This is so free my espresso flew out the window. I'm really not into this kind of thing but you created good mood here with the quartet and I actually enjoyed this. The mellow tones combine well and this is a very moody piece which I've had looping in the background while I worked. Thanks for challenging me.

Cheers,

Nigel

did this song (quickly) early in the morning of New Years day, before anyone else got up and i could improvise without distractions.

i'm sure i leave the majority of you with your heads spinning after listening to my music, especially you PJ, but that's my intention - rouse thought.

Psychoacoustics is the study of subjective human perception of sounds and thought it would be a good description of this song.

i only know this after doing some research on the pioneers of Avant-Garde Jazz like Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane and Albert Ayler where timbre, not harmony and melody, is the backbone their music.

It does make think on Zappa.

It catches me in a way. I like it. I imagine myself driving the road, lot's of kilometers (1,8 mile  ;) ) to go and listening to this music. I could drive all night long !

You must be a very talented, well studied musician. What I admire here is that it may sound not-logical but you succeeded in letting it be logical.

I hope I have made myself clear

two thums up!!

Best wishes for 2010 !!

mr2kewl

oh contraire covermark, i believe you're the talented one. i've heard your musical ability and i'm the one in awe.

my talent... well, that's a very subjective thing since one man's trash can be another man's treasure.

as for being studied, i've only been playing the bass guitar for a little more than a year and the keyboards even less, can't read a note of music or tell you the difference between a mixolydian scale and the bathroom scales.

i do this as a hobby and i'm just having fun with it all.

so, thanks for the compliments and you have a prosperous New Year as well.

Talented Naturally gifted people like you sometimes make me feel completely inadequate.  This is intended as compliment.  Please take it as such.
