It all started last Saturday evening after we had a whopper of a T-storm and ended up with no power or telephone service for 2 days.  Which meant no A/C, indoor plumbing or Internet.  ~whine~

So, this was a great time to reach for the BR and some fresh AA's.  Many thanks to Neil Young for the loan of his cowgirl for a couple of days...

Produced all on the Micro BR from start to finish and includes:
* acoustic rhythm guitar
* electric rhythm guitar
* electric lead guitar
* electric bass
* electric slide lap guitar
* double-tracked lead vocal
* double-tracked backing vocals

5-bounced sub-mixes
1- mastering mix

Thanks, Jim. Although I would trade quite a bit to have that inside line you've got with the muse...

I'll get you a mix with out lead vox. Gonna take some remixing though. Maybe later this weekend.

Greg,

Here is how I organize it when I know I'm going to have a lot more than 4 tracks in a song.  I don't know how this might differ from the way other people do it. Would be interesting to hear how other folks do this too...

FWIW... I think it's useful to think of the 4 channels on the M-BR as 'CHANNELS' and wish they were labeled CH-1, CH-2, CH-3, CH-4 instead of calling them TR-1, TR-2, TR-3, TR-4.  Then it's easier (for me) to visualize it as having 8 sets of v-tracks available with 4 channels on each set of v-tracks.  The attached track sheet is organized that way.

So, looking at the track sheet:
  • Record each of the first 4 tracks of the song and adjust the mix.
  • Turn off Rhythm and then Bounce those 4 tracks to (1V2 - 2V2) aka SubMix I
  • Set all 4 channels to VTrack V2... you should see V2  V2  V2  V2
  • Set the pan for 1V2 to L50, pan 2V2 to R50 and set levels. Turn Rhythm back on.
  • So now you can monitor SubMix 1 while you add 2 more new tracks on channels 3 & 4.
  • Adjust the mix, turn off the Rhythm, and then Bounce it down to (1V3-2V3) aka SubMixII.

So, you can keep repeating the process and each time you bounce you move on down to the next set of v-tracks with a stereo submix to monitor and 2 free (open) tracks to record your next parts on.

Yer welcome, Greg.

Here's a PDF of a blank track sheet, if you want it.

A little trick I learned while doing this project: Notice at 3V4 where it says (more bass).... At that point after listening to SubMixIII, I was wishing I could turn up the bass level. Problem is: The bass level was set and mixed in way back on the first bounce!  Then I noticed the bass part still sitting there on 3V1... so all I had to do was set the v-track for channel 3 back to V1 and make that track active again.  Then I set the levels for: SubMixIII| (more bass) | slide guitar and mixed 'em down to SubMix IV.   Did the same thing in the next round to bring up the level of the lead vocal.

Thanks, Hooper

I have a rotten memory to begin with ("the memory of a salad" a friend of mine coined years ago).  The pdf file has the potential to prevent me from throwing something across the room.

I exaggerate...but not much.
