is my pick up bad?

Hi
I just received my Micro BR and plugged in my accoustic, but I am not getting any sound out of it.
I am completly new to recording and guitars so please bear with me. My guitar has what I assume to be a piezo pick up - a 9 volt battery with leads to a small circuit board connected to the plug as well as a lead going into bridge.
The battery is fresh.
How do I know if the pick up is working?
Can I plug into the Micros 'guitar in' directly or does it need to go through an amp?

if you are sure the guitar is working properly, use the guitar input-make sure the input is set to GTR(typical noob oversight).
You could test it the cord by simply touching the end off it to see if the MBR hums. You should see the VU meters too.
Also, make sure your line out to monitors are hooked up properly-better yet use headphones to try it out-make sure the volume is up

Does the guitar work when its plugged into a different amp?
process of elimination

Using headphones with GTR selected on input with level all the way up - strum the strings....no sound.
Pulled the cord from the guitar and touch the end.......humming sound and showing up on meters.
I do not have an amp (don't have one) in line between the guitar and amp - do I need one?
I'm assuming the 9v batt inside the guitar is powering a little preamp - does that sound right?

Thanks

There should be a volume control on your guitar. Is it turned up? If it is, then the most likely cause of the problem is a weak battery. I know you said it's a fresh one but try another anyway.

Do you have anything else you can plug the guitar into to see if it's working? A guitar tuner, for example.

You don't need to connect an amp or anything else between your guitar and the Micro BR. If the guitar's pickup and electronics are working, you can plug the guitar directly into the guitar input of the Micro BR.

When I plug into the guitar I find a position, just before the plug is fully inserted, where I can get sound to come through.
Are there different types of 1/4 plugs like mono or stereo?

thanks

Definitely. Mono plugs have a tip and a single sleeve or barrel, with a single insulator ring separating them (the plug on the left in the picture below). Stereo plugs have a tip, a ring, and a sleeve, with two insulator rings -- one between the tip and the ring, and another between the ring and the sleeve (the plug on the right in the picture below).

Most guitar jacks are mono but a few are stereo. What brand and model is the guitar?

OK
Now I know the pick up on my Epiphone 350 PR is working and has what I assume to be a mono plug built in.
What about the MBR, will the GTR 'in' accept both stereo and mono plugs?

Another question, which maybe should be a seperate post, but perhaps you guys may able to help me with;
I plan to use the MBR as a field recorder, will a passive microphone without a preamp be able to plug directly into the MBRs GTR 'in'?
More specifically, will this http://www.afabsound.com/product.php?productid=2&cat=1&page=1 work?

Thanks
