Looking for a Percussion Device

Does anybody know of a simple device that would either contain or even sample a percussion instrument, like a tambourine?

I would prefer it to be very compact, with only a few touch sensitive pads on it.

Simple, too - No sequencer or advanced functionality. Just hit a pad to get my sleighbell or whatever. Obviously a self parsing sampling capability would be great.

Could something like this exist? Listening to Side Effects "Held it in your hand", and also seeing the Staples "Easy Button" hack made me realized this device would be pretty handy if it was available.

Thanks,

Mark

The new KORG WaveDrum looks pretty good. I don't think it has sampling but it has lots of great sounds built in and a very dynamic and versatile pad, plus rim sensors. It's expected to be available around December or January and will sell for under $600 US.

If you want something cheaper, you could get the KORG nanoPAD for about $60 US. But it doesn't have any built-in sounds. You have to connect it to your computer via USB and use it to trigger sounds from software.

A similar device is available from AKAI for about $70 US.

Or, you might consider the Alesis Performance Pad for about $250 US. It has 233 sounds built-in.

If you want built-in sampling, you could get the Roland SPD-S for about $520 US.

Thanks 64 - Appreciate the research/information you have compiled. It's too bad the Korg USB device was not an independent unit - Perfect size. The Roland SPD-S looks pretty cool.
