Vocals acapella multi-tracking with BOSS Micro BR

Started by jfriesen, October 15, 2009, 08:26:50 PM

I've recently purchased the BOSS Micro to learn how to do multi-tracking on it. Anyone with some experience in vocals multi-tracking who can share some of their know-how and experience, please do. It would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
John

Hi, welcome to bossbr.net!
Vocals are "just" another instrument to record. All standard rules and regulation for multitrack recording apply. So you need to learn (from the manual and/or training video's; links can be found throughout this forum) about the basics of multi-tracking, bouncing, effects -the difference between Loop and Insert effects and the magic of EQ and compression. Some general tips:
-When recording a-capella, try to always use a metronome (the Micro BR has some standard metronome drum patterns) to keep it all nice and tight. You can later switch it off when mixing down the song.
-Use Panning to create a wide stereo image, with "lead" part in the middle.
-For the most natural sound, use the same Reverb setting for all parts.
-The MicroBR's built-in microphone is pretty d*mn good and very sensitive-see how far it gets you before investing in an expensive microphone. Experiment with how you position the MBR in front of your face (distance/angle). Find the "sweet spot" for your voice.
-Most of all: have FUN!
-Post your recorded songs here on bossbr.net for feedback, compliments and friendship! Or if you're stuck and need input or collboration.

Welcome jfriesen !!

Sdc said it very well, and I don't have much to add. Except that I have done it much the same way as Sdc said. One addition ... it can be wise to have a guiding instrument when laying down the first track to be sure you hold the pitch throughout the whole song.

This was my first acapella effort:

I also did a acapella version of blackbird for the Woodstock fest:
