Thanks guys. I'm glad you all appreciate the time and effort that goes into each of these songs.

Vann - For me, for most songs, it's all in the drums. Without a solid rhythm, the rest of the song has no foundation. So I take the extra time to get the drums right, and build up from there. This song came out like it did because of the "toys" I have built. It was a completely different song sonically until I built the Nurse Quacky (envelope filter), and added the flanger. Originally, it was just overdrive, delay, and phaser.

Blooby - It's always hardest, IMO, to get the balance juuuusssst right with the drums and bass. Too low on the drums, and they're buried in the mix and muddy. Likewise with the bass. Most of my songs are works in progress, even after the mastering phase, and I'll give them a listen through various sources (computer, iPod, car stereo, home stereo) and tweak if something really strikes me as being "off." Generally, I mix the drums a little higher during mixdown, anticipating the inevitable loss of certain frequencies in mastering.

Sounds to me like you are getting your sounds down pretty good.  I find the mixing very hard. I agree with you drums are the foundation for most songs.  Especially more the rocker type.
