Monday is "Colombus Day", a national holiday here in the States. I find that to be pathetic and inappropriate. It glorifies an explorer who was anything but a hero. His landing marks the beginning of the exploitation, enslavement, and near genocide of many tribes of Native American people.

This post is an instrumental painting that attempts to generate imagery of the time just before the landing of the Three Ships...then the landing itself...and then the subsequent years of war and confinement of the Native Americans to reservations.

This was close to my first recording on the 1200. I had just gotten my banjo and was barely able to play at all. There are horrendous timing issues on this and i had no plans to post it...but i played it for a friend who suggested i leave it just as is because it sounded "like some musical artifact that had been unearthed in an archaelogical dig".

There's nothing fun about this piece. It's dark and depressing....a dirge. Reality isn't always pretty.

Colombus Day is not celebrated by ALL Americans... :-X

PDG - Mmm. I have to say that I found the piece moody and evocative, but not depressing at all. If this is one of your first recordings on your 1200, then you seem to have mastered the various techniques required to produce something of an extremely high standard very quickly. So well done for upload. On the broader issue of the subject matter, well, I don't think anyone comes out of whole story covered in roses. And of course, in something of an irony, Old Chris was brought back to Europe in chains.

Love this one too !!  This is a kind of tune I never get tired of. It's atmosphere and tho' it's inspired by a sad part of history, it still is a most enjoyable listen

Thanks for listening guys and for your supportive comments. This song touches a nerve with me still.

ORH: Good book. The Lakota Sioux were yet another in a book with many sad chapters.

SteveB: If you didn't find it depressing, it's probably thanks to the sounds of the ocean and the thrush singing and perhaps my flute. They all seem to carry the voice of tomorrows and hope.
As for the recording itself, i had a Fostex VF80 prior to my 1200 that brought me..kicking and screaming...into the digital realm  :D

Vanncad: Thanks..it is a touchy subject for me. It is without question the most ludicrous of all our "national holidays" IMHO..They paint the guy as some kind of savior.  He wasn't.

T & Geir...thank you as well. You guys especially might get a laugh out of this "holiday"....beings that the Vikings were on the N. American shores long before old CC. Guess that didn't count though since they didn't stay to "civilize" the heathens.

I know Charlie, about 492 years before :) The Viking were not as brutal as they are known as.

This song is going to my piePod btw !!

The piano and banjo work well together. I love the ocean in the beginning and end (although I find it distracting in the middle).

Really fantastic.

Pinedog, touching song, man. I think the banjo works well in here. Did you play the recorder/flute in here?
