I was going to say Wilco...Combine the Beatles with The Band and you get Wilco.

I really can't think of a modern band that even comes close in all these aspects: they would have to sell millions of recordings worldwide, extend the boundaries/re-write the rules of the pop music medium, garner non-stop media coverage, open the doors for dozens or hundreds of contemporary 'similar artistes', then traumatize the world by breaking up, and then each find varying success as a solo artist, and then finally (and most importantly), inspire thousands or maybe even millions of musicians and songwriters to explore similar territory.

One of my favorite musings on alternate history would be what if The Beatles had reformed in the Seventies? Would lightning have struck twice?
