The normal checklist runs 1) is it a condenser mic? If it is then 2) do you have plug-in power switched on?  After that I should imagine that you would be right for effects.

You've probably checked these but that would be my first check.

Nice voice, Alex.  Whenever I get home there always seems to be someone singing it but they don't seem to know it over here in Oz.

A "normal shure" would be an SM58. It's great (arguably the greatest) for using with a PA or miking a guitar amp; but because of those characteristcs it's less suitable for recording vox or acoustics, where you need a better dynamc and frequency range -more sensitivity. The built-in mic is a condenser that's why it sounds better.

I can't say which is better but the manual is pretty clear on this, if you are using a condenser mic then you have to have the plug-in power switched on, if you are using a dynamic mic (which the Shure SM58 is) then it must be turned off.  So that's your first call.  Make sure that you have the plug-in power on or off as appropriate and then see how you go with the effects.

When it comes to condenser mics there is varied opinion.  Some people swear by the built-in mic, some people swear by the plug-in that T(Osckilo) showed, some people like battery powered condenser mics.  Me, I don't swear anymore, my good wife stopped me doing that, and backing horses and fighting after closing time, so I'd just make sure that the plug-in power was off, see if the effects work then and if they don't, then I'd come back and ask again.  The fact is that this bunch of people are the most helpful anywhere and if I come to the end of what I know then there are at least a dozen who will step and help.

Good luck and give us some songs.  There are a few singers here but you can never have enough.

I'm going for a condenser now rather than plugging in, because I found that my accoustic tone has suffered since I have been playing electric guitars....

The site is addictive and it becomes a personal mission after a while to get a good recording.....

I haven't been using Mics as I can always hear a "hiss" in the recording....

Anyone know if there is a Mic which cuts the Hiss out?

That is the mic I have T, it works very well, I record all my acoustic and some vocals with this mic and it is great.  This is a song I recorded with this mic, singing and playing guitar at the same time, straight into this mic/microBR.
