Phil Spector would love it

Hello, I'm almost new to the forum.  I was here a while ago but dropped out for a variety of reasons but none to do with enjoying this place. I have kept track on an occasional basis but just popped my head back in because I found something that I know some of you would appreciate.

I recently bought a small speaker to use with the Micro BR and it works a treat.  It's the Altec Lansing Orbit M

It's a small mono speaker and the chain goes gtr-MBR-speaker as you would expect but it works (for me) a million times better than small stereo monitors.  What is really good for is practicing at low volume.  I can play in the house at night without disturbing the less appreciative members of the family and the whole thing fits in the gig bag so I can take it anywhere.  Plus, and this is a big plus for me, turn it up and it sounds like you are playing through an old car radio.  Like I said, Phil Spector would love it.  And it would work fine in his present accomodation, I'm sure.  Under AUD50 so it's not too expensive if it doesnt work out for you and you can always use it with your iPod.

Nice to be back.

I ended up getting one of these a couple of months ago - at the asking price, its sound quality can't be beat.

I've been using it most often as a "combo" amp for some of my electronics noisemakers - my only complaint so far is the appearance of fragility of its attached cord - I would have preferred a jack instead. No problems yet, though.

Because it is a monophonic speaker (that sums your stereo mix so nothing gets lost on playback) it's also nice for monitoring the MicroBR - if your mix sounds good here and on headphones, then it'll probably sound good everywhere it's played.

I thought it was a tad on expensive side myself, but its sound quality blows away a similar device I have that is USB-powered. The Orbit M sounds more than twice as good as this other thingy, at a little less than twice the price. Extremely portable, too.

Still wish it had an input jack, and although the first set of batteries I put in haven't quit me yet - also a port for external power.

I agree about the battery issue but, like you, I'm still using the first set of AAAs.  I think we just have to resign ourselves to living on rechargeable batteries.  They are the bread and butter of C21.

On the upside, this has become the main accessory to my iPod.  I'm considering buying another because they are very flexible and useful.
