Pan problem...

Started by boriswilliams, September 03, 2009, 05:48:18 PM

Hi everyone,

Well this may be a stupid question, but I found nothing in the manuel that can help me...
I set the pan adjustments for each of my tracks, but once I bounce them in a single (or even 2) track(s), my pan settings disappear and all the tracks are "panned in the center" again (well, hope my english is not too bad... ::)
Even when I save the settings, using the stop and records buttons, my pan settings are gone...

Does anybody know how to keep them for the bouncing ?

Thanks guys !  8)

Panning is a mixer setting - not a track setting. The BR-864 has 64 tracks but only 8 mixer channels. So, after you've recorded 8 tracks, panned them and bounced them, I think it's assumed that you're going to record some new tracks which you'll then want to pan differently in the next bounce. So they just default back to centre after each bounce, except stereo track pairs which default to L50/R50.

Some of the more expensive recorders, such as the BR-1200 and BR-1600, have a "Scenes" feature which lets you save snapshots of the mixer settings which can later be recalled. But the BR-864 (and BR-600, 900, Micro BR, etc.) does not have Scenes, so you have to set the pan of each mixer channel before each bounce.

BWS - Well it's nice to know that people are still using this machine, I had many happy hours with my 864. So, once you've 'bounced' your tracks, then that's your 'pan' positions locked for those tracks on playback of the 'bounced' track.  If you're 'bouncing' to '1' track, then you will get an everything in-the-middle situation, there's nowhere else for the sound to go. If you have 'panned' your tracks before bouncing across the stereo field, and you 'bounce' to two tracks, then those 'pan' positions should remain when you playback the two tracks. Your original tracks will remain untouched and should still be 'panned' to whichever position you allocated to them before bouncing. Good luck, and have fun.

Thanks guys for your answer ! I work with the 864 for 3 or 4 years and even if it seams that computers take over from this kind of device, I really appreciate workng with real buttons and faders...

It seams that the problem was due to the fact I bounced on a single track. I've just tried to bounce on 2 tracks and my pan settings remain as I set them.

thanks again for help, that's cool !
