Well, I thought we'd try something new this time. It was something we used to do when I was taking guitar class in school. Not sure how well it will go over, but if it fails, then we move on right? ;)

So here is the challenge...

Write a song... Instrumental, camp fire, jazz, shred, blues, with vocals, whatever! But you must use the following chords in the song.

Am
F
C
Em

They can be in any order, any combination, as long as you do not use any other chords than the ones listed.

If this goes over well, we can maybe do something a bit more difficult, or challenging. But this might do to start us off.

A couple of things to note:
1. You do NOT have to use all four chords in a single progression. As long as the song contains all four chords somewhere in your take.

2. You may use inverted variations of these chords. Whether you want to play the F barred on the 1st fret, 8th fret, or even open, is entirely up to you.

3. No variations like diminished, 7th, 9th, etc... IF this gains any interest we can do more "interesting" ones later.

4. I am aware that there is not much variation that you can do with these chords. But the variation is supposed to come through in our interpretation and use of dynamics. It'd be interesting to see how different everyone will make this.

GOOD LUCK!!! ;)

Ha Ha thats funny Steve, I was playing around with this chord combo and I kept instinctively going for the G chord, couldn't help myself.  If you strum the Am-F combo back and forth it has that classic Neil Young groove going on, that is hard to get out of my mind also.  Lets see what we all come up with, I may get some time to squeeze something out this week.

???

My Missus wonders why I spend so much time on here ... nobody in the house would have got that chord joke ... my Stepson is in a quite successful band and he would not have understood.

:D

I'll take your damn challenge!

My songwriter's group meets this coming Monday, and I'm not working on anything.  So thanks for a little boost to structure and motivate me.

I'm kind of weird this way anyway.  I often impose a set of arbitrary constraints on a song I'm writing--and challenge myself to forge something out of the limits I've imposed.

I did a song once where every line in the verses had to end on a word that rhymed with "door."  (They were: mayor, ancestor, honor, more, investor, store, before, victor, defector, tax collector, dinosaur, for, tour, yours.)

I haven't recorded it yet, but I will, and post it eventually.

That reminds me of this great song by The Roches.

That little guitar sounds great for its size!

ING

This changes everything
Why is it happening
I got a feeling
And you're changing

The sky was darkening
When we went out wandering
It got confusing
And I started singing

Ing ...

Will we be marrying
Instead of parting
Or are you still singing
The praises of waiting

I had a gift to bring
A simple little thing
I had a little fling
That we won't be mentioning

Ing ...
          Where is all this leading?
Is there any meaning?
Are we just careening around?

I'm always wondering
When it starts thundering
Which is the better thing
To be still or running

You with the broken wing
Who fell down flying
How is it dancing
With any old Earthling

This is a great idea, Sai. After tying up a couple loose ends, I might just give it a try!

Funny song.

The neck on that guitar looks like the neck on my Martin Backpacker.
