Quote from: launched on August 26, 2009, 10:20:39 AMI thought all songs only had three chords...

I'm assuming that you got your headphone preamp and some headphones, and the singer sang live with everyone else?

I was reared on prog and fusion, so I think all songs are twenty-plus minute epics with time changes, bass solos, an occasional reference to dwarves, and the ability to clear people out of parties in five minutes flat.

I have one four-channel headphone amp, but I have yet to use it.  For this recording, I just moved the mic far away, made sure it was dead opposite the sound waves from the monitor speakers, and crossed my fingers.  Not the best, but it works for what we're doing.  I'm the one trying to create a product (for lack of a better word), but I try not to let that get in the way of having fun.  If a mixdown is a little hollow sounding from the ambient noise, so be it.

Thank you for the kind words.

Ouch.  Yeah...um..."Hold Your Head Up" is not quite ready for public consumption.  I believe it might require the use of some sort of truss for our vocalist.  I would hate to be present should his testicles explode.

I'm just odd that way.

Quote from: Blooby on August 25, 2009, 05:32:04 PMWe were actually doing a somewhat disjointed version of Argent's "Hold Your Head up," but the hard drive filled up.  We started playing it as a goof, but then it became fun.  I see endless noodling in our future with that tune...perhaps with another live Kaossilator solo.

Dangerous thinking.

I would love to hear that.  Rod Argent, of course, is a Zombie. ;D

Here we have another brilliant living room performance by the Museum of Oddities.  This is – dare I say – every bit as good as the original.  Perhaps better.  This vocalist certainly has some pipes, although I would venture to say that his style is not all that different from Everett's.  Perhaps it's just the style of music that lends itself to this style of singing.  Either way, he did a fantastic job, nailing a song he didn't even know very well.  The mix is just about perfect, as always.  Still would like a tad more kick drum thickness, but that is a minor gripe.  Love the Hammond presence this time around!  The twin guitars are both played and mixed with absolute precision.  I have trouble hearing the bass at times, but that could be my own half-deafness.  The more I listen to this (4th listen now), the more I do like it better than the original.  The flute in the beginning is awesome; I only wish he had played the exact same notes as the original (I believe there is just one note that is slightly different from the original, but it's one that gives that moment a really cool sound).  If you know the song well, I'm sure you know what I am talking about.  Again, a very minor niggle.  I still can't get over the fact that this is a "live" mix.  How many "professional" live albums have I heard in which the sound is less than half as good as this?  Certainly crowd noise factors in on a true live album, but they are still supposedly professionals with insanely expensive equipment, and you manage to create a perfect mix of a live performance – and without any live mixing.  I just can't get over it.  Another amazing job.

May I make a request?  I believe all of your jams have been of the Southern Rock variety (aside from "Gravity" and "Roadhouse Blues," although the latter also has similar Southern leanings).  And while I can dig that, being a Florida native myself, I understand you have roots in prog and fusion, and would love to hear something more along those lines, especially some proper British prog; something really absurd and super-proggy would be fantastic.  As you know, I'm a huge Yes fan (and I know you are as well), so any pre-1980 Yes song would be astronomical.  What are the chances of this ever occurring?

As always, thank you for your thoughtful commentary.

Yikes.  Our comfort zone is definitely classic and southern rock and some blues.  I think I'm hovering somewhere around nine or ten thousand CDs, so my tastes are relatively broad, but I'm not really sure about the others.  I think I might get the crew to tackle an early Tull song (when they were more bluesy), but Jon Anderson-era Yes?  Yoicks.

I, myself, would love to do "Yours is No Disgrace," although I am intimidated by it, but who would dare sing it?  Not that we have a large repertoire yet, but I usually am the one playing a lick or riff, and the drummer joins in.  If there is interest, we explore it for a bit.  I know the drummer likes prog, so maybe we can ease into it.  Come to think of it, I think "Sweet Dreams" by Yes or "Squonk" by Genesis would be fun (and much easier) as well.  I guess "Sweet Dreams" is more pop than prog, though.  How about "Teacher" by Jethro Tull?  I'm open to suggestions.  Just don't go all "Close to the Edge" on me right out of the starting gate.

Peace.

I've been holding off on commenting on this one because I've been working on this very song since April.

A buddy came by, we went fishing, we caught fish, and then went to the house to clean them and eat. Well, I cleaned, he found my guitar (hardly recognizable from the dust collection) and started playing this tune. That is ultimately what made me pick up the guitar again after several failed attempts to learn.

now for the  masterbump Which I learned about today LOL

I've given this a dozen listens since it was posted, and have played along to is quite a bit. This holds a special place in my heart Blooby, great cover

I wasn't going to ask for "Close to the Edge" -- I am not that cruel. ;D

I understand your dilemma.  Who would sing a la Jon Anderson?  No one but Jon Anderson, frankly.  So the singing alone would be tough, let alone the ridiculous drums, bass, guitar, and keys.  So I guess that's a big, fat, hairy NO for Yes.  But, as you said, perhaps you could ease into it.  I think your suggestion of "Teacher" was fantastic.  I would love to hear that.  Certainly, it's not a very "proggy" song, but still Tull and still awesome.  If you tackle that one over the weekend and post it, you will make at least one of your many fans extremely happy!  :D

I was going to say Tull earlier, but thought it would be frowned upon. Both singers you have introduced have the range for that. And hell, you have a keyboard player. What ivory plunker is not prog?

Thanks, Tony, Bosko, and Launched.

Launched, Tull...frowned upon?  Some "critics" just don't know any better.  If I weren't a school administrator, I surely would've been a one-legged flautist.

Bosko, our next jam is Thursday, and I will try to subconsciously mindmeld them in order to be receptive to "Teacher."  However, last week was so unbelievably bad all the way around that much of the jamming wind has been taken out of my sails.  We'll see.
