Another Museum of Oddities live tune from my living room.  We're up to a sextet for this recording: two guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, vocalist.  Gotta love the BR-1600 for such things.

Yes, I know...I know we fell prey to the lure of the "Can't You See" three-chord wonder.  We even played "Free Falling" as well (yup, three chords).  I ask you what the hell happened to my prog and fusion roots?

Quote from: Blooby on August 14, 2009, 06:55:33 AMI really like how Everett, the guy who sang "Gravity" and "Melissa," delivers ballads (especially since what he did was just a first or second take), but we are going to expand the sonic palette a bit and try an additional singer next Thursday.  He's an old buddy of mine who first impressed me by belting out the last two lines of "Whipping Post" while filling a beer at a keg party years back (When he finished, the party erupted in spontaneous and drunken applause).  I've also seen him kill the harmonies (in a good way) to "Seven Bridges Road" and do a great version of "Oh, Darling."  No guarantee it will work out.  Every time I heard him sing, I may have been drunk (a trend?), so we'll see.  I'm obviously excited about the prospect, though.

Well, John did come over, and he impressed.  This was the first thing we tried and although he didn't know this song well (to the point of knowing every melody line), it is evident he has some pipes.  When he delivered the "Hole in the Wall" and "Now a mean old woman, Lord" lines, I had a %hit-eating grin on my face.  His voice takes up a lot more of the frequency spectrum than my buddy Everett, so I had difficulty mixing it (too loud now?).  I had three beers before I started mixing, and it's been downhill from there, so I just quit for now.  On Bosko's request, I tried to boost the Hammond a bit more than in the last song without it overpowering the mix.

The tune's high point for me was when the keyboardist unexpectedly broke out the flute patch.  We didn't have the wherewithal to discuss ending the song with it as well, so per usual, we all just stared at one another during the outro until somebody gesticulated in a sprightly manner.

Once again, first night with a new guy.  It can only (hopefully) get better.

Peace.

All sounds good on my cans, mix and vox included. I dont get to jam or play out any more, so am very jealous! Sounds like you had a lot of fun.

Vanncad

Ah yes - I've jammed this tune many times (in various states of inebriation). Never had the keyboard though - it's a great additon here. Always a great tune to play on and a definite crowd pleaser.

Sounds really good Blooby. Sounds like you guys have a fun jam going there.

Keep 'em coming.
It ain't pretty being easy.

Thanks, Geir, Steve, and Vanncad.

Steve, I was in the same boat with no time to jam, so that's why I slowly outfitted my house.  I don't travel or set up equipment.  People walk in and then plug in, and we're ready to go.  Having said that, I may have a busy job, but I don't have a wife or kids.  I heard somewhere that these two may occasionally take up some time.

As for "Whipping Post," it will happen eventually.  We have already toyed with the opening and verse portions as non-serious diversions.  We have been doing "Stormy Monday," "Dreams," and "Melissa."  What can I say?  I love the Allman Brothers.  I'm sitting beneath a signed band poster from their '89 reunion tour. I wouldn't be surprised if we end up trying "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," "Midnight Rider," "Ain't Wastin' Time No More," "Jessica," "Blue Sky," and I'd love to try "Don't Keep Me Wondering."  I'd also like to try "I'm No Angel" by Gregg Allman, a bit poppy, but it has that cool descending line.  Plus, it has the added bonus of having one of the worst lyrics ever in, "C'mon Baby, come and let me show you my tattoo."  Ahhh, poetry.

Peace.

Thanks, Flash and orh.  Turns out the new singer is itching to try again.  In his own words, "I ain't satisfied," so there will hopefully be some more on the way.  We were actually doing a somewhat disjointed version of Argent's "Hold Your Head up," but the hard drive filled up.  We started playing it as a goof, but then it became fun.  I see endless noodling in our future with that tune...perhaps with another live Kaossilator solo.

Dangerous thinking.

Jeez, not sure how I missed this. Probably because I haven't checked the 1600 section for a bit  ;D Anyway, excellent job - always loved this tune and you guys did a great job. However, I thought all songs only had three chords...

I'm assuming that you got your headphone preamp and some headphones, and the singer sang live with everyone else? Either way I thought the vocals were nice and clean.
