Backup! Backup! Backup!

Just thought I'd warn you all to backup up your memory card as often as possible. Last night I was importing the backing track for the Les Paul tribute and somehow my ENTIRE memory card was wiped clean!! I'm talking EVERY song I've recorded over the past 60 days is GONE. Countless hours of programming drum tracks, mixing, mastering, remixing, remastering of tracks - GONE! Every patch, every microphone setting- ALL GONE!! Luckily, a good majority of those have been completed and uploaded to my hard drive.  But now the process begins of recreating the unfinished works.  Today, I'm not such a hppy camper.

I feel your pain.

Let's all take this as a warning, curb our natural urges to keep on keeping on.
Heed the call for backup brothers ... Do it now , before it's too late!!

I now do regular back-ups as a similar thing happened to me before, so know exactly how you feel. I was then determined to make a better job of the tracks that I had lost.

I've lost some too, but now everything is lost in gazillons of bytes of unoranized backups  :(   but most of it is there somewhere on one of the 4-5 pc's I use ....

I wish the BR filesyslem at least had timestamp on the files ... and filenames from the song titles .....

Me, too - Time stamps would be handy. What I do now is save a text file in the song folders that has the backup date for a label like so:

20090817.txt (August 18, 2009)

It's still an extra step, but it helps.

Oh, sorry to hear about your data loss Bob - Man that sucks.

yeah ... I have 6 sd-cards (3 of wich are working ok) I copy all of the card to a folder named "yyyymmdd - SDX" (eg (20090817 - SD3) ..... but still leaves me with some GB of unnescessary backup as I copy all of the card everytime.

Well I've begun to delete now. I am now copying a finished song-folder "SONG000x.BR0" to the PC and renaming it to "Songname - SONG000x.BR0"

That's a good naming convention - I also copy individual song folders like you do. Probably the best way to do it!

Ted has made reference to a data sync program in tutorials. Maybe check that out, as it only updates the files that have been changed. Sync Toy and Robocopy(Command line) would work well, too.

I don't have enough material recorded to worry about this yet, so I make full backups of just the new song folders. I get worried that I might copy bad data over good data...
