Bouncing and Mastering: Problems with Pans

Started by agisrlc, April 21, 2008, 04:12:14 AM

Hello everyone! just a very useful community!!!
i have been using micro br for one year and i cant still figure out how to solve this problem:

suppose you have recorded 4 MONO tracks. For example 4 guitars.  Now set the pans left-right as you like.

but now you need more tracks and need to bounce, or just want to master.

well i would like to master all 4 tracks to 2 tracks(stereo).
when i do so the pans are destroyed.

this is because in the manual it says that the pans of the destination tracks have to be:  L50 and R50.
this destroys the initial pans that i have.

what can i do???
what do you do???

i just need to record more than 4 tracks and keep the pan right!!!

i have become  crazy.......

thnx a lot!!!!

guitarron

when i bounce i don't set the pan of the destination tracks, i leave them centered-i haven't experienced losing the pans this way
the example on pg 50 of the manual is referring to a stereo source track already on trk 3and4 that is to be bounced(L50-R50), not the destination track

Ron is right, bounce to v2 1 and 2, change all the v tracks to v2, link 1 and 2 and pan them max left and right. Your panning will be there fine.

Panning affects the playback mix only. It has no effect on the recording of tracks. In bounce mode, you're playing back four v-tracks and recording the playback mix to two v-tracks. So just set the pan of each of the four playback tracks as desired and don't worry about the destination (recording) tracks. After the bounce, the destination tracks become playback tracks when you press [PLAY] and their pan is set to L50 and R50.

Quotein the manual it says that the pans of the destination tracks have to be:  L50 and R50.

Where does it say that? If you're referring to step one on page 50, they're talking about a stereo recorded performance on v-track 1 of tracks 3 and 4. To maintain the stereo image, those playback tracks should be panned L50 and R50. However, the destination of the bounce is tracks 3 and 4, v-track 2. There is no pan control for these recording tracks.

ok guys.
thanx a lot you gave me some light!:)

when i have bounced the 4 tracks into 2, then i suppose i should return the pans of the destination tracks at the center position in order to hear them right and the result will be exactly as it was before the bounce.....

is this right??
just confirm..

thnx a lot of lots

Not necessarily. It depends on whether the tracks are stereo linked or not (see page 41 of the Micro BR manual). If stereo link is off, center means that each track is sent to the left and right channels equally, which is effectively mono. To get stereo, you need to pan the left (odd-numbered) track fully left (L50) and the right (even-numbered) track fully right (R50).

If stereo link is On, then center means that all of the left channel information will be played only from the left channel, and all of the right channel information will be played only through the right channel. This is the same as L50/R50 when stereo link is off, and is what you want for playing back your stereo mix.

I believe the BR sets the pans correctly automatically when you select a stereo pair of tracks as the bounce destination, so you shouldn't have to change the pan at all after the bounce. Just press [PLAY] and you should hear the stereo mix of your original four tracks panned exactly as you set them during the bounce.

Notice I said during the bounce rather than before the bounce. Yes, you can change the pan settings while the bounce is in progress. This allows you to create effects like panning a lead guitar track from left-to-right or whatever, to create a sense of movement within the stereo panorama.
