Nice song, I got into the lyrics bigtime. Nice riffage too :)

Bob Iles

Thanks, Steve.  Glad you like it.

Those lyrics were actually a collaborative effort with my longtime writing partner.  The riff is completely new (less than a week old!).  The song was originally written in 1994 as an acoustic number.  I've re-worked the verses a little, and completely overhauled the chorus.  Sadly, I'm not aware of any recorded versions of the original for the sake of comparison.

Big time song!  I really like it. ;D

Strong lyrics are pushed up high by very good guitar playing and vox.

You obviously know your way around the studio too!  Good use of effects, blending, mixing, mastering.  You obviously spent a lot of time on the drums and they are as good as they get from inside the BR.  They seem a little thin though, next to the strong guitar works.  A live drummer might add to this song, which otherwise lacks in nothing.

Great job!
Let it be known, there is a fountain, that was not made, by the hands of men.

Thanks for the compliments Rolow.  I agree with you about the drums...I can't seem to get them to sound "just right" during mastering...they always seem to thin out. The sound great up to that point. But I'm working on it.

The mixing comes from years of practice with an analog 4-track.  Having that experience allows for greater planning throughout the whole recording process.  95% of the recording process IMO is in the arrangement of the song.  Knowing what you want to do with the basic tracks BEFORE you lay them down is very important.  Otherwise, you get something that sounds like it was just thrown together.

When it comes time for final mixing (and on the BR, Mastering) I spend hours trying to get it right.  That includes a good deal of bouncing various mixes, then tweaking the mastering tools until the final product is where I want it.  It's not unusual for me to put the song aside for a few hours or days, then revisit with "fresh" ears and ideas.

This song kicks ass, Bob! Great riffs and vocals. That melody line in the chorus is just the balls, man! Excellent solo, too.

Thanks!!!  I like that solo a lot, myself.  Perhaps one of the best I've ever recorded.
