These days I merely dabble at being old and wise.
But I swear, I used to absolutely excel at being young and stupid.

Nice job guys. I still prefer the live solo Elvis version, but this is lovely guitar playing and the vox work so well. I guess I might prefer the solo Elvis version cos I can play it, I can't play these lovely jazzy licks. Really like that guitar work.

Cheers,

Quote from: Bosko Schwartz on July 30, 2009, 08:55:27 AMWHOA! :o :o :o :o :o  Will you chill out for a second, there, Hooper and Greeny?  Please?  You're making the rest of us look bad.  I mean, REALLY bad. ;D  I may never post anything again now.  I think THIS is what 48 was so afraid of regarding newbies being too intimidated to post -- it really has nothing to do with the proposed merging of the BR boards.  And it has nothing to do with newbies either.  Not anymore.  I'm never posting again.  Forget it. ;) ;D

Don't be daft!

Strangely enough, when I first arrived on this forum and heard Hooper's mixing prowess, it inspired me to up my game on my own stuff. It showed me that getting the right mix is a vital element of any song (I'd been pretty lazy up to that point - i.e. just record as quickly as possible and move onto the next thing), and that a bit of time and attention can pay dividends in the end. So rather than be intimidated, it changed my perception of what's possible. I hope Hooper's doing the same for others now - because this is how it should be done! Along with your good self, Ferryman and AndyR... all master mixers.

Hoping to do some more with Hooper soon. And it's time for his guest cameo on the lastest JK album!

Really, really nice job.  Strong all the way around but the guitar fills are stealing the show for me (in the best way).  Never drawing attention away from the vocal...just fantastic and tasty.

Haha, thanks, Hooper!  I had no idea you felt that way! ;D

Greeny, you, Hooper, and many others definitely have inspired me in that respect.  Rather than not wanting to post anything again, in actuality, it makes me want to work harder and post more.  Kind of like a challenge, but a friendly one in which all parties have a great respect for each other.

Back to Hooper.  Hooper, I hope I don't offend Greeny, AndyR, or anyone else when I say this, but I have to say that you are the best producer in this Forum.  I mean, you seriously, SERIOUSLY could/should be a very rich and successful sound engineer.  I don't know what you do for a living, but you should get paid for this "hobby."  And A LOT.  Along with your production skills, you're a top-notch guitarist and vocalist as well.  A true triple-threat! ;D

You both really blew me away with this one.  Perhaps the best cover song I have ever heard. :)

Whoa now, Bosko.  That's too much!  Way too kind.   :o
You'll get me in trouble!  :D
But seriously, I do think it's true that sometimes 'The food tastes better if somebody else did the cooking'.

And I'm not kidding... this morning I clamped on the cans and listened to every song again on the Stan Laurals page.  There's more going on there than just playing instruments, singing and punching buttons.  You are making music, man. Really good music!

I'll just mention even though I know we all appreciate the very positive and supportive environment around here that sometimes I wish that the superlative responses weren't thrown around so freely. I'm mean, it leaves nowhere to go when you really do want to make a strong endorsement!  (see post above) And it sort of sets up a barrier.... to where if someone honestly can't make some superlative comments about a song then the only option is to say nothing at all... and that's not good either. (results in a bad Read/Response Ratio)   ;)

Not an easy song to play or sing...but you guys did a bang up job of it. Nicely mixed...clean & clear, vox out front and on top. Top to bottom, side to side, this here tune is one sweet ride  ;)

I can't thank you enough for the kind words. :)

I agree about the superlative comments, and perhaps I shouldn't have said you are the "best" producer or that this is the perhaps the "best" cover song I have heard.  Incredibly strong compliments are indeed thrown around quite loosely in this forum, and I sometimes wonder if my music really is as good as some of the comments I have gotten would lead me to believe.  But then again, why say something if it's not true just to make a total stranger feel good?  I think we are all kind souls here in the Forum, but we're not social workers.  I am pretty sure that everything written is meant.  Perhaps not to the extent that is sometimes projected with our written compliments, but still true.  That said, maybe I'll chill out on the superlatives for a while ... as you said, it leaves no room to improve.

I will leave you with this: Opinions may change with the ebb and flow of life, and new things will be discovered along the way, but damnit, I meant what I said at the time I wrote it.  Your production is just too polished and perfect.  And this version of "Alison" is absolute brilliance. ;D
