OK, here goes ... I'm gonna do something I haven't done before, and that's post something that was basically thrown together in a matter of minutes.  One take for everything, one mix, no re-mixes.  It is also a collaboration, and not a "The Stan Laurels" (a.k.a. Bosko Schwartz solo) song.  It's a piece (hopefully not too much of a "piece") from my side project with my good friend, Corey, called The Void.  He wrote and played the guitar part as well as wrote the lyrics.  I did the rest, including the awful singing.

Be warned ... it's not my usual fare ... not that my usual fare is all that awesome anyway, but this is definitely different ...

Strange how I caught this right off - usually it's record a little music and bedtime by midnight.

I like this tune because I hear some tones from some artists that I dig into from time to time (Don't get mad...): Todd Rundgren, Joe Jackson, America and some Rick Wright(RW in some of the piano parts).

Obviously the one-off straight to mix is impressive, but you guys manage to hold it together very well. The vocals do a lot to carry this number.

If you could explain who did what and how you made it that would be great.

This is something else...

Glad you dug it, Mark! ;D  I like Rundgren, Jackson, and America, although I am not familiar with all that much of their work.  It's definitely a nice comparison, though!  Never heard Rick Wright.

Corey came to me with the basic guitar piece written, then we sat in my "studio" for a few minutes coming up with the arrangement and bassline, playing together with him on guitar and me on bass.  Then I recorded the drums to lay the foundation; immediately afterward, he recorded the guitar, then I the bass.  Later that day, I threw piano on it and mixed it and gave it to him the next day.  A day or so later, he gave me lyrics and I recorded the vox and came up with this (very rough) mix.  Not all done in one session, but very quickly (for me) and in one take.

Not my best work, but I wanted to show everyone I do have the ability to not be so obsessive and anal at times ... :)

Hey Bosko, this is a groovy track!

I dug it! It reminds me of Todd Rundgren and a bit like 'The Same Old Drag' from NMW. Reminds me a bit of Brian Wilson circa 'Smile', too. Have you ever checked out June and the Exit Wounds? They explore these fields as well.

Btw, Rick Wright is (was, he's now the late) the keyboard player for Pink Floyd. It's a bit 'Paintbox'-ish, too - come to think of it!

Nothing wrong with anal, but sometimes you just have to get out of the box.... nevermind.

I like this, its a cool, natural groove.

Thanks, cuthbert! ;D  Ah, of course, Pink Floyd's keyboardist.  I knew the name Rick Wright sounded familiar.  In that case, a crazy & undeserved compliment -- thanks again, Launched! :D  I don't hear the "Same Old Drag" comparison, but that's about my fav song on NMW, so thank you! ;D  And a Smile reference too -- holy shit! :o  Never heard June and the Exit Wounds, but it sounds like I'd dig 'em.  Thanks again for all the great comparisons.  Really huge compliment! ;D

Thanks, TonyW, I appreciate the words! :)

Love it love it love it. This doesn't sound thrown together. It just sounds like an ultra-talented songwriter doing his stuff. The piano works so well with the floaty vocal. I can hear a bit of Pet Sounds-era Brian Wilson in the melodic ear that you have for certain parts. But I think it just harks back to times of 'proper' songwriting. It has plenty of your trademarks in there... the clever changes and shifts you like to do. So it's not as far from your solo work as you may think - not to us Bosko fans anyway, lol.

You'll only ever get respect and admiration from me with stuff like this. Got any more gems stashed away?!

i missed this one thanks for bumping it greeny.

this has got a groovy distant feel to it, i can relate to the todd r referrences but with the piano only, it doesnt remind me of any of his songs but it has his feel again piano only, but most of all it reminds me of the stan laurels, for something thrown together in a couple of minutes, i wasn't  expecting something so restrained and fragile. as the say bosko FMGWABP

Thanks, T! ;D  Your words are always appreciated!  Odd, I don't think it sounds like The Stan Laurels at all, but then again how could it not?  I guess I just listen to it differently since I didn't do everything myself like I usually do.  When you say "treat" my vox, do you just mean add effects?

Thanks, Greeny!  Glad to hear you liked it -- I was a bit afraid to post this, as it's not as "polished" as most of my other stuff.  Any Brian Wilson comparison is a HUGE compliment, so thank you!  To be fair, my friend did write the guitar, which is the main "skeleton" of the song, so I can't claim the writing credit.  I did help arrange it.  I thought my friend wrote a beautiful song; all I did was make it "bigger" and flesh it out with the bassline, piano, drums, and vocal melody.  I do have a few more gems stashed away, but I don't know if I'll be posting them.  53 listens on this and only 5 comments -- ouch. :(  Maybe I should stick to posting my own stuff ...

Thanks, Jim!  It's an honor to have the legendary phrase FMGWABP attached to this track! ;D ;D ;D
