They're not hard to like or understand. You only have to watch their Martin Scorcese concert movie 'The Last Waltz' to see what the fuss is all about. They're just incredibly multi-talented musicians. Any band that can get Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Clapton, Dr John, Neil Diamond, and Dylan (amongst others) on a stage with them have to be a pretty class act!

Hey Greeny - I didn't mean to offend anyone. I've seen parts of "The Last Waltz".  I was a long time ago, and I never made it through the whole movie.

I guess I have just never had one of their songs "connect" with me.
Nothing against their talent or influence - just a personal thing. I may have to go back and re-visit their catalogue. Maybe I just haven't heard enough of their music.

Are there any songs that you (or other members here) can personally suggest I listen to?

Thanks,

 - Vann

Lol - I'm not offended. To be honest, I caught them pretty late on. I'd never even hear of them until my mid 20's when I just happened to see the Last Waltz on TV. I was pretty hooked from that point. My favourite part of the movie is Joni Mitchell doing 'Coyote' with them, but all their own songs are amazing too. It's hard to know where to start with recommendations. 'Music from Big Pink' is widely regarded as a landmark, masterpiece album. Personally, the tracks I especially like are 'King Harvest', 'It Makes no Difference', and 'Ophelia'. 'The Night they drove Old Dixie down' and 'The Weight' are the real big, critically-acclaimed hitters though. Timeless tracks!

This is my personal favourite...

I love footage of them in the studio... it shows the incredible dynamic and talent between them...

Sorry to hijack your thread BB - but I know you'll approve of some Band preaching!!!

Cool Greeny - They show "The Last Waltz" on our public access channel once in a while so I'll grab a few beers and watch it the next time it come around.
I definetly prefer the second song to the first (Makes no Difference). The first song reminds me too much of the "Saturday Night Live" house band.

Thanks for the links.

P.S - Sorry for the hijack as well BB.

Thanks for all the great comments and of course I don't mind this kind of hijack, I love The Band, they are one of my favorites for sure.  Their first album "Music From Big Pink" is the one for me, I listen to that one constantly.  This music came out of nowhere and shook the musical world to is roots, it is cited by Eric Clapton as one of the big reasons that they broke up Cream, he was so shook up after hearing that first album.  The effect of that one album  on music history is enormous, it is hard to realize it now after all these years, but you want to talk about an influential album, those first two Band albums, especially that first one, are enormous.  It is kinda quirky music, it takes multiple listens to really appreciate it properly I find.
