JAL - Welcome to the Forum. Follow the link at the bottom to see what your machine is capable of with some perseverence.  :)
All these BR recorders have a 'learning curve' that needs to be understood in order for you to put the BEST in and then get the BEST out. Fortunately you've come to exactly the right place. There is NO question that is too dumb to ask, and remember, not one of us was born understanding how to operate a BR-Recorder, so we've ALL been in the same position as you.

I had the 864 myself and thought it was a very good machine, apart from the annoying change of faders from tracks 1-4 to 5-8. But everything you need to make great music is there at your fingertips. So take your time. Ask questions and review some of the Tips/Vids on this site. Listen to what others have done with their machines. And then enjoy making music for the rest of your life!!  ;D

JAL - Do you have the User's Manual for your 864? That should be able to tell you everything. Or, what exactly are you stuck on?
The 864, as far as I can remember, has a very good drum machine, the guitar effects can be edited, the faders (although a pain in the butt with tracks 1-4 & 5-8), are nevertheless very servicable, and with a little, slow, application from yourself can produce some very, very good results. (MKS's Tears In Heaven, for instance). If you haven't got the User's Manual, well there is sometimes a possibility of downloading a copy from the Internet, or if you ask very specific questions, you will no doubt get an answer from one of the Posters on here, including me!  ;D

JAL - Well 1st of all I've added a BR-864 pic to this message so we know what we're talking about. So what exactly do you want to do?

What about finding a drum pattern that you like as a starting point?

I'll wait until you reply before going further. But just to say, this machine has everything you need to make some decent recordings, so don't go looking for or buying extra stuff at this stage.

JAL - I'm not exactly sure whether or not you've managed to find a User's Manual?
Here's a download link if you still need to download one.

sorry, ive been busy...
um when i play the drum patterns it only plays then for a measure or two.
im still tryin to figure out how to tweak an individual effect. (speed up or slow down a delay)
ive figured out how to record things. but they get broken up when i try to put them on my pc. do i have to mix everything onto one track before i transfer it?

thanx for your help!

JAL - Well to answer your last question first, I don't know, because I've never transfered a track or part-song to a computer. Someone will know, or it will probably say in the User's manual.

If you press the Rhythm Guide button, until the Pattern light is on, you will then get a selection of 'parts-of-a-Pattern' to play. That is: Intro, Verse1, Fill1, Verse2, Fill2, End. Rotating the Shuttle Wheel will advance the Patterns until you come to the 'Break (silence)' at the end. I think there are a couple of hundred Patterns, so there's lots to be playing with. These Patterns will keep on playing until you press 'Stop'.

With the 'Loop Effects' 'EQ' etc, these too are Increased/Decreased by using the large Black Shuttle Wheel.

Does that Info help for the time being?
