Krautrock - Love it or Loathe it, or never heard of it?

We appear to have done prog to death, so I thought I would start a thread on Krautrock. I LOVE Krautrock, Can of course reign supreme (and transcend the genre) but I am also a huge fan of Amon Duul II and Neu! Kraftwerk are also pretty cool. Anyone else love the noodlings of our Germanic cousins from the 60s and 70s?

Cheers,

Nigel

I think Kraftwerk are the most influential band ever. The Man Machine album is pretty much the template for every electronic, dance, and techno song that followed. 1978... unbelievable!

I love them. Trans Europe Express especially.

I also know and like Can, but that's about it.

It might be a perversity, but I love hearing vocals in German!

I was never really into this style but I always liked Gary Numan and his Tubeway army, does he qualify?

He doesn't qualify, but he is heavily influenced by Kraftwerk - as were all of the emerging synth / electronic bands of that time. I think he's great. He was a major part of my musical landscape in 1979 - 1982.

We were all into Devo over in Canada at this time, definately doesn't count does it, but man they rocked in their flipping quirky way!

I guess I don't have any krautrock faves after all, just Gary Numan and DEVO, and they don't count.  You need good German bands.  Put me in the "never heard of it, maybe just barely category"

I've seen 'em a few times now, not in big venues like this, but in beer tents!! Wait 'till they've had a few in said beer tent, that's when they REALLY get going!!!!!
There's two sides to them. Celtic pipes and drums, and Rock/Metal. Got to admit I prefer the Celtic stuff they do.
They call themselves a Medieval rock band.

Interesting Stevie, German celtic rock! Here's more wjhat I meant of the classic Krautrock - heavy rock with a wacky psychedelic edge. Ignore the weoird video, this is a classic track of Amon Duul II:

And here's a good clip of them live, although a track that does not feature their female lead vocalist:

I spent most of the early 70s listening to this stuff and prog bands like Genesis. For some reason it grabbed me more than Deep Purple and Led Zep.

If it were not for you and ORH, Nigel I don't thing I would be listening to any Krautrock (Can is all I know, though). I think the shit's awesome - Prefer to watch the live recordings on YouTube to get the entire vibe.

BB, I like Devo, especially their rockier stuff like "Be Stiff". My best friends Dad is from Akron, OH area - I guess they used to practice in his garage during the early days.

Now, should I waste my afternoon digging around for Krautrock? Yeah, after my last appointment.
