Do you know the sound you're after? That should be the main goal.

Great advice. And related,  using reference tracks can be invaluable as well. If you find a mix that is similar in genre, tempo and feel to what you're aiming at, then a direct comparison can be wonderful. (Be sure to match decibel level as the louder track usually sounds better even if otherwise equal.)
