Cheering and punching the air,
Back slapping and lighting cigars
Against all odds they finally got there;
Apollo 11 headed for the stars.

What once just seemed so madly out of reach
Setting a new standard as no-one else could
A magnificent dream via Kennedy's speech
The eagle has landed and all is looking good.

From a warm early Florida afternoon
To the cold Sea Of Tranquility on the distant moon

Not a contest not even really a race
No point Russian into things
Many eyes then turned towards space
And the benefits that technology brings.

The world was different then 1969
Different clothes and different cars
That one small step could've been yours or mine
Apollo 11 headed for the stars.

What a perfect song Ray I was 9 at that time. Fifty years later the bbc made a wonderfull podcast 13 minuten to the moon. Now it's 55y ago right?
Nice gag in the lyrics https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w13xttx2
I do have an electric bass and guitar, i do have an acoustic guitar. I even have a keyboard and a Roland drum set What I seem to miss is skills. So to cure my at least 40y frustration I dicovered my instrument being my voice. So I finaly had the nerve to take singing lessons and make my voice heared thanks to Songcrafters.

Beautiful song Ray, I love the interplay between the acoustics and the subtle rhodes. Epic bridge here, really opens things up. I love the little laugh you kept in there too  ;)

Brilliantly written song Ray. I wasn't born then, but it must have been something to watch it happening.
We've come so far now. I like the line about the Russians lol.
The guitar playing is so good.
I have 2 profiles on this site, (NOW COMBINED INTO ONE PROFILE PAGE)
One is a musical partnership with Keith Allen, ( we record songs as "The Devil's Toupee").

I watched "The Giant Step for Mankind" unfold on our black and white TV as the once thought unachievable goal became reality. The harmonic laden acoustic intro and outro are very cool and creative. Your poem like lyrics are presented  with excellent vocals. The middle lead electric guitar solo is subtle but real tasty and skillfully played. A great song, Ray!

Those things we take for granted - when we're young and immature - will surely return to haunt us when we're old and insecure

Great song Ray.

I was about ten.  My dad and I went out into the street just to look up at the moon.  The moon with men on it.

Ron D Bowes

Lovely guitar. You are such a talent Ray! I have always looked up to you musically since the day we crossed paths. A fine musician and a great track, as ever.
