I wrote this poem kinda thing about 6 months ago and decided to put it to a typically sounding 1940's dance band - sort of Glen Miller-ish if you will.

Anyhow, a bit of a novelty track but I enjoyed arranging it. Also, I think this is the first song I've ever written that has no rhyming lines in it.

(Yeah, I know - I need to get out more)

She's waiting on the windy white cliffs of Dover
For the returning fighter squadron
Hears the drone sees twelve Spitfires approaching
Smiles and waves as her lover dips his wings.

In the officer's mess she serves sandwiches and beer
Cops a wink from the flying man
Cigarettes shared later behind the sheds
He tells her of the 109's he's smashed.

Until one morning late September
Only eleven planes out of twelve
Not one Spitfire dipping wings
A slow walk back to the barracks.

Fifty years later, his photo still the side of her bed
A spinster still and can still hear the drone
Of the never returning Spitfire.
And still see the dipping of the wings.

Ah, F it. Is there a any style this man can't do? No.

Now he's even writing poems. Damn.

Up to your high standards. Hugely enjoyable. Took me way from the world where the first snow is hitting the ground.

Somewhere in the distance i saw Jack smile. It was Shining all over... :)

Great track, wash of ambience plus poetry. Very interesting chord progressions here, it feels like it never totally settles which is perfect for this track. Excellent stuff

Amazing...not at all surprised.. lovely and moody.
A bittersweet story... for a movie scene..

The last week or two I have been hearing your song about the couple that meets in a bar and she got a peg leg and they end up staying together.
Its so bluegrass fun and so different from this but your spectrum of tune styles is 360 degrees... again thats just you and dang perfect every time

Fine story/poem! Nice Glen Millerish style, on some spots I hear a bit High Llamas vibes, which is from totally different genre. Anyway, brilliant job  here!

You are a talented and creative man, Ray. I can see the the silver screen video of this in my head. I wouldn't know where to start with putting something like this together. Great 1940's era music, a thoughtful poem, and an excellent vocal. You've got it all!

What i loved about this was the lyrics , its a movie that needs to be made, the script is written in these lyrics, i can see it all and can imgaine how it would be, it's such a inventive and good subject, that lyically you could make a whole movie from it, that i love, nice work ray, these  kind of tracks  leaves you thinking and this one is subperb
