This is sad.

Anecdote of the day:

Years ago my wife picked up a bargain basement CD in Woolworth's of rock interpretations of Christmas songs and carols, 2 of which are sung by Paul Di' Anno. The CD, Rock Ya Christmas, is played every year.  I can't pretend that his renditions of Silent Night or White Christmas are seminal, but they are played every year.

The John Sloman version of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" is awesome.

The CD is filed in the "miscellaneous"  section of the collection.  Everything else is in strict alphabetical order by artist.  I need to get a life, although I may have left it too late....

Agreed, something never sat right with the DiAnno / Dickinson Iron Maiden argument. He was magnificent and really they lost something special when they changed singer that Dickinson could not replace (even though I like most Maiden stuff). Those 2 early albums were maybe never surpassed in for that period of metal IMO.

R.I.P. Paul DiAnno

I did not really listen to Iron Maiden... but recently I talk to folks who really like them and they got me interested in the band.  I read their story about how they made it big in the US by alot of hard work and literally kicking doors down (well, sort of)..

but the real big fans said the first singer was the best... and they didn't know why the band canned him...
anyway.. I gotta go hear some stuff off the first two albums.

I got into Iron Maiden quite early and although i did like Di'Anno for his grittier/punkier vocal style... I doubt Iron Maiden would  have made it as big and lasted for so long without Dickinson.

Over the years i've got bored with Dickinsons voice and truth be told... That voice changed when he had to learn to sing "properly". But as easy and tempting it might be to crown Di'Anno as the best Maiden singer... No :)

This is one of those Pandora's box debates I think. Be a great one to chat about over a few beers... pretty hard to imagine Paul diAnno winning the popular vote, but I would like to be devils advocate and say they had a raw punk edge with Paul and might have had a great future with him but with a slightly different audience. But yeah would they have been as massive... nah probably not  ;D just would loved to have seen how it would have turned out.

But yeah Brucie is pretty damn good and took them next level, not going to argue!  ;D

I've got some Samson vinyl. Pictures of brucey are hilarious. Who knew from back then what heights he would rise to
