Not Fade Away is a song written by Buddy Holly and Norman Petty, recorded by Holly with his band, The Crickets, in 1957. It is based on a variation of the "Bo Diddley beat", a rhythm popularised by Bo Diddley.

The Everly Brothers en single (1973)
Black Oak Arkansas sur l'album Race with the Devil (1977)

Bo Didley beat rules!

I like the crunchy retro sound you've managed to achieve here. It really does sound like an early recording. Closer to late 50s (early 60s at most).

...I actually used the J37 emulation, that famous Abbey Road studio magnetophone, for the vocals and my guitar (telecaster clone) went through the guitar rig 6 mill with compressor emulation and sounds that gave very crunchy sounds and indeed we're closer to the sound of the 50s. At that time I was a teenager and in my band, as there were no imported Vox or Fender amps yet, we tinkered with the guitar amps ourselves, which, when pushed to full volume, had a "natural" distortion long before it was invented.  ;D  ;D

JP, you have nailed down the retro sound of the late 1950's. Well done there!

..indeed it's the same beat as the Bo Diddley beat ...which Bo Diddley wouldn't have invented by the way ..it comes from Africa

Life is not about the number of Breathes you take, it is the amount of times your breathe is taken away

It sounds good with the bass added JP! Here's another one by Eric Clapton. It's called Willie and The Hand Jive.

I always thought it was southern Africa, but the ethnomusicologists point to Yoruba traditions.

I love the wandering melodic bass – because your instincts are so different from mine. For this rhythm, I would have gone for LOW root notes, and that would have been boring.

An album that had a big impact on me was "Snoopy vs.The Red Baron" by The Royal Guardsmen. It was a novelty/children's record. I was only 4 or 5 years old, but it introduced me to the Bo Diddly beat, and classic songs such as "Battle Of New Orleans" (which I can still sing from memory), and their cover version of "Li'l Red Riding Hood" by Sam Sham and The Pharaohs – which was one of the first songs I ever learned as a teenager.

What I'm saying is: This beat has been in my psyche for a long time. I love it.

I hope I never hear another version of this again.  That is because none of the others could ever measure up to this in my mind... one hell of a job JP!
