Tim asked me if I wanted to play drums on this and perhaps lead guitar...

I was absolutely interested... I have been changing my drum sound so this is the first recording with it like that.  mostly tuned up.

but this is all Tim really... and honestly as I was immersed in this I thought this feels like "Moondance" from Van Morrison... it isn't but I got that same feeling.

Tim's vocals and acoustic guitar on this classic American rock hit by 70s and 80s sensations REO Speedwagon make this into a very wonderful and different cover.  It has a wonderful life of its own while paying tribute to such a great song.

I also think Tims bass on here is amazing... I thought that is how I would want to do it... so I am not Gary Richrath on lead... or Alan Gratzer on drums either but I had a blast putting a couple things on Tims great cover.

I agree totally
Stephen, I'm going to have to call on your drumming skills; it's my Achilles heel.
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

The way you're playing it makes it sound like REO Speedwagon was ripping of the Doors. I had to check the original and the similarity is still there, but more buried.

You sound like the 70's. You sound like bunch of hippies (in a good way).

It's also plain and clear that Stephen truly doesn't need any moder guitar thingies to get his point across. Regardless of whatever cheese crater he's playing through he makes it sound authentic.

The drumming is another aspect that really helps the sings to sit in the mix. The organic quality of sounds and performances makes it all positively dated sounding. Cool beans!

Warm and effective vocals.

A cool take on a classic REO song! Some fine acoustic guitar and vocal Tim. Stephen's drumming gets better and better each time I hear him pounding the skins. The lead solo is a bit buried in the mix but what I can hear sounds good. Well done on this cover guys!

Oh well ........

Nice cover!

I wish those drums were a little louder in the mix – I can tell you have come leaps and bounds in your playing and in your recording techniques. The bass could be louder as well.

You should experiment with mixing to a pink noise reference. If I can figure out how to do it on an Micro BR, you can figure it out on your fancy gear. In particular, I never know how loud to mix the drums. In my most recent song, I let pink noise help me choose my levels and I barely tweaked 'em.

This is the only REO song I didn't hate. (In high school, we called the band REO Spedwagon – which is very insensitive.) As often happens here, a Songcrafters cover has made me reconsider my latent antipathy towards bands I hated when I looked like this.

Ted,
I listen to a many drums mixes and they are all quite different with lots of schools of thought... and I agree that as a general rule I don't get the drums right... and I also agree that I am getting somewhat better at it.  The drums and in particular the snare drum on "Eminence Front" really makes that song pop... it is illusive... the low end... these days I am trying to focus more on not playing so much and finding the pocket more... but I also don't want to sound like anyone else...lol...

also I get you on certain bands and eras... some groups annoy ya... and nothing wrong with that... I never liked much of the REO after this album... the really big album was pretty good but also pretty bubblegum... (Hi Infidelity)... but it did garner alot of teenage girls into the fan fold... so it sometimes does come down to writing the checks... can you imagine the music we would get if money was no object or even commercial likes.
