Hello SC Peeps, any of you hipster/fun-types ever come across one of these? =  A partial capo. Been strumming geetar (badly) for over half a century and I've only recently encountered this item!
Although, have to say that in the 1970s, one of the garage bands (literally – we never moved beyond a mate's parents' garage space), that I strummed with had a mad lead-guitar type who had some home-made contraption which consisted of a very shortened bottle neck and some strong rubber bands, which he strapped across the guitar neck and made some very esoteric noises. This was probably something along the lines of this partial capo thingummybob. Amazing stuff.

I've never used or seen a partial capo but I have occasionally used a capo on only some of the strings leaving some open. If that makes sense. For example I think I left the two skinny strings open and capoed the other four on the 2nd 3rd and 5th frets. A bit like alternative tunings I suppose.

Now I don't know which thread to post to... but I chopped up one several years ago (but after the earlier thread which I don't think I saw.) I bought a couple of cheap chinese made capos that were awful. No curve so they would work for 4 strings out of the 6 but two (either top or bottom) would buzz. The solution was to make a partial capo. Might have to find it and use it again. Was a fun little diversion.

A very interesting perusal, and proof-positive that there's nothing new under the sun. I have to presume that these avant-garde implements are displayed on the exotic wall of the music shop, away from the Plecs, mono leads, and D'addario 10s?
Also have to admit that this partial capo leads to all sorts of discoveries of alternate tunings as James and others have pointed out. Way to go.  8)

Edited to add: I've discovered that there are books written for this curious design, like this one.
