..a song I had trouble putting together; it's a jazz waltz
Claude Nougaro is one of our greatest French singer-songwriters, with a style that is both lyrical (his father was a singer at the Toulouse opera) and jazz. (and brasil bossa He played a long time with Baden Pauwell)

I have covered several of his beautiful songs, which you can find here:

the song explains the opposition in style between Java music (musette musical style in France) and jazz (American musical style) which opposed each other in France in the 30s and 40s.

I've included a live version of this song found on YT because I loved the musical quote that I'm sure some of you will recognise at around 0'35".

What is this music? I await your answers.

The text is full of humour and I'll give you the translation in the scroll.

When jazz is
When the jazz is there
La java s'en
La java s'en va
There's a storm in the air
There's water in the
Gas between jazz and java
Every day there's more jazz
is settling in
So the rage in the heart java's on the run
Her little buttocks in battle under her skirt
slit
She crushes her gauloise and goes out into the
rue
When the jazz is
When the jazz is here
La java s'en
La java s'en va
There's a storm in the air
There's water in the
Gas between jazz and java
When I listen blissfully to a drum solo
There's the java grumbling in the name of the fatherland
But when I shout bravo to the accordionist
It's the jazz that yells at me calling me a
racist
When jazz is
When the jazz is there
La java s'en
La java s'en va
There's a storm in the air
There's water in the
Gas between jazz and java
For me jazz and java are all the same
same
I get drunk at the Bastille and black out in
Harlem
For me jazz and java are basically the same
like
When jazz says: Go man, java says: Go
home.
When jazz is
When the jazz is there
La java s'en
La java s'en va
There's a storm in the air
There's water in the
Gas between jazz and java
Jazz and java should be friends
For it to be so, here, I share in
brother
I give jazz my feet to mark
to mark its tempo
And I give java my hands for the small of its back.
of its back.
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

JP, I really like this alot... yes, it is jazzy.... but I don't really pay much attention to genre.  I realize why the thing exists, for people who are more discerning.  To me it's just another box to put someone in.

your rendition the tune is very happy... and sounds festive... and sure I would stay and listen to this.... for sure... and i wouldn't care what "color" it is either.

That is a crazy mix of styles to my ears. Crazy in a good way. I always like a challenging listen and this is certainly that. But at the same time is very musical and enjoyable. Brilliantly done!

C'est un mélange fou de styles à mes oreilles. Fou dans le bon sens. J'aime toujours une écoute stimulante et c'est certainement cela. Mais en même temps c'est très musical et agréable. Brillamment fait!
